Jeffrey R. Spiegel, superintendent of the Ferguson-Florissant School District, will retire at the end of the 2010-2011 school year. The district\u2019s Board of Education approved his plans at its April meeting.<\/p>\n
In a letter to the school board, Spiegel said, \u201cI have been honored to know and work with incredible educators, students, parents and board members. I know that I am a better human being because of the relationships I have formed in the district.\u201d<\/p>\n
Spiegel, 55, has spent his entire career at Ferguson-Florissant, beginning as a high school math teacher in 1976. After 12 years in the classroom, he was named Dean of Students at McCluer North High School. In 1990, after facilitating the development and implementation of a K-12 alternative education program serving at-risk students, he became Administrator of the district\u2019s Student Support Center.<\/p>\n
His responsibilities expanded again in 1999 as Area Executive Director for Secondary Education. He was named superintendent in 2004.<\/p>\n
During his tenure, the percent of graduates attending college and other post-secondary training jumped to 85 percent and the district retained its fully accredited status.<\/p>\n
Spiegel is involved in North St. Louis County. He serves on the Executive Board of Directors of North County Inc., a regional development organization, and a member of the Greater North County Chamber of Commerce. He was selected to participate in the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation Superintendents Forum and was recognized by North County Churches United for Racial Harmony and Justice, an initiative that promotes diversity and racial harmony.<\/p>\n
In the next few weeks, the school board will develop a plan to select Spiegel\u2019s successor, including a process and timeline. His retirement is effective June 30.<\/p>\n
