Dining Divas Have a Been There, Done\u00a0That Attitude With Mango’s Downtown<\/strong><\/p>\n

Oops, I did it again.\u00a0 I picked another restaurant extremely convenient for me for our Dining Divas outing.\u00a0 When I mentioned the restaurant to a coworker, she yelped in excitement and asked if she could join us.\u00a0 The restaurant of choice was Mango at 11th<\/sup> and Lucas in downtown, and it\u2019s one of her favorites.<\/p>\n

It was a gorgeous night in a jam-packed week.\u00a0 A night that had some of us considering other options for the evening.\u00a0 For the Overworked Diva, taking a break from her 12 hour day working at her computer and enjoying quality time with her husband seemed like a great idea.\u00a0 For the Team Divas, bidding a final farewell at a co-worker\u2019s going away party seemed like the required decision.\u00a0 And for the Mommy Diva, settling down at home with an unsettled stomach seemed like the best option.\u00a0 But dining out with the Divas won again, and it usually does.<\/p>\n

We love it.\u00a0 A nice getaway with the girls.\u00a0 And for our men at home, they can be grateful.\u00a0 Gabbing with the girls hopefully minimizes griping to the guys.<\/p>\n

The Newcomer Diva asked how many years we\u2019ve been doing this.\u00a0 For a handful of us, we\u2019ve been consistently sharing dinner together for the first Thursday of the month for at least 10 years.\u00a0 Ten years at 12 different restaurants a year!\u00a0 That\u2019s a lot of food and a great deal of fun.<\/p>\n

We always warn the Visiting Divas that it\u2019s not about the food for us.\u00a0 You can\u2019t look at the night as a disappointment if you didn\u2019t like what food you ate.\u00a0 It\u2019s about being able to let off your chest that you can\u2019t stand your boss.\u00a0 It\u2019s about being able to share with the ladies the scary details of a doctor\u2019s visit. It\u2019s about being able to get them to vote on your wedding invitation design.\u00a0\u00a0 The food is just secondary.\u00a0 And for this month\u2019s restaurant of choice, it\u2019s probably a good thing for some of the Divas.<\/p>\n

Mango serves complimentary fried plantains with pine nuts and a green pesto sauce as a unique starter to your meal.\u00a0 At first slightly hesitant, we were happy to have the treat as we decided on our meals.\u00a0 For appetizers, a couple of the Divas tried the Ceviche which was raw Tilapia marinated in a citrus juice with peppers, onions, and cilantro.\u00a0 You ask the Grandma Diva, the juices \u201ccook\u201d the fish.\u00a0 You ask the Picky Diva, the juices hide the fact that she was eating the raw fish.\u00a0 The texture was even too much for the Adventurous Diva.\u00a0 She had to pass hers along.\u00a0 The Spinach Pie and the Empanada were also great starters.<\/p>\n

Mommy Diva tried Chicken #2, as we called it, for her dinner.\u00a0 The fancy name for it is Aji de Gallina, shredded chicken in a creamy sauce with rice and potatoes.\u00a0 According to Mommy Diva, the only thing recognizable on her plate was a pile of rice.\u00a0 She said <\/strong>if she got a whole chicken breast, it was from the skinniest chicken on the planet.<\/p>\n

Chicken #1, as we referred to it, or Pollo a la Parilla<\/strong>, <\/strong>was one of the safer choices on the menu but one of the more boring dishes we had.\u00a0 It was just your basic chicken breast with a wine and garlic sauce.\u00a0 Tasty but slightly overcooked as were the chicken kabobs.\u00a0 Another safe choice, but too well-done.<\/p>\n

It seems that those Divas who were more adventurous really enjoyed their meals.\u00a0 The Pescado a la Chorrillana, saut\u00e9ed tilapia, was delicious.\u00a0 The Domo Origato Mr. Robato, as we called it, or Lomo Saltado, beef loin with onions, tomatoes and onions was full of flavor.\u00a0 The Scallop special came highly recommended by the Referral Diva, and it was phenomenal, some of the best she\u2019d ever had.\u00a0 Topping off the meal, the Sangria.\u00a0 Definitely a dessert in a glass.<\/p>\n

Maybe not one of our favorite places, but Mango is definitely worth a try.\u00a0 Plus, we love the atmosphere.\u00a0 After trying out about 120 restaurants, we\u2019re still enjoying the Dining Divas.\u00a0 Dinner out with the girls is always the better option.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
