Lesli Henderson,<\/strong> a third grade teacher at Lusher Elementary School is the Hazelwood School District Teacher of the Year. Henderson and other staff members will be honored at the annual PTA Founders\u2019 Day Celebration on February 4.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m flabbergasted!\u201d she exclaimed, moments after receiving a surprise visit, flowers and hugs. \u201cI\u2019m so excited and I feel very honored. I have worked in the Hazelwood District for 19 years and I never thought that I would be chosen for this.\u201d<\/p>\n Henderson started working as a student teacher at Lusher before becoming a teaching assistant at Larimore Elementary School. In 1993, she worked at Twillman Elementary for four years before returning to Lusher as a full-time teacher.<\/p>\n Mary Piper, interim superintendent, Paula Brown, professional development specialist, and Steve Sandbothe, assistant superintendent for school accountability, provided the unexpected visit, bouquet and hugs as Henderson\u2019s students cheered.<\/p>\n \u201cStudents from previous school years return to visit and volunteer in Mrs. Henderson\u2019s classroom,\u201d said Julie Melton, Lusher\u2019s principal. \u201cOne former student sent me an e-mail stating, \u2018I love Mrs. Henderson. Her room is fun and lively and is geared toward helping students understand basic concepts in their subject matter. She is an excellent role model for anyone wanting to become a teacher.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cLesli Henderson is an outstanding teacher,\u201d said Felicia Boyd, Lusher\u2019s instructional specialist. \u201cShe goes above and beyond the call of duty each and every day.
