Many schools in the Hazelwood School District have come up with a variety of ways to lend a helping hand to the people of Haiti. All proceeds will go to the American Red Cross except where indicated.<\/p>\n
Arrowpoint Elementary School<\/strong> \u2013 \u201cLet\u2019s Link Together to Help Haiti.\u201d Students purchased a link in a paper chain through for 25 cents\u00a0 on Jan. 22 and wrote messages to those in need.<\/p>\n Barrington Elementary School<\/strong> \u2013 Student council\u00a0 collected change through Jan. 29 for Kids Against Hunger, an affiliate organization of the House of Hope, an all-girls orphanage in Haiti.<\/p>\n Hazelwood Central Middle School<\/strong> \u2013 Students\u00a0 donated $2 for a non-uniform day on Jan. 29 and students are also encouraged to write messages of expression that will be shared with the rest of the school. In February, Hearts for Haiti will continue with grade-level competitions. Planning for that is underway. <\/strong><\/p>\n Hazelwood Northwest Middle School<\/strong> \u2013 Since August 2009, the school\u2019s chapter of the National Junior Honor Society has supported Meds & Food for Kids, a St. Louis-based organization working to cure childhood malnutrition in Haiti. Next month, a $400 donation will be sent, with additional donations occurring during the rest of the school year<\/strong><\/p>\n Hazelwood West High School \u2013 <\/strong>\u201cHazelwood West Helps Haiti\u201d \u2013 students are selling ribbons in the school commons, a fundraising competition among first hour classes is in progress, the school\u2019s volleyball team will donate profits from a night of its concession sales and T-shirts with a special design will be sold starting next week. <\/strong><\/p>\n Hazelwood West Middle School <\/strong>\u2013 \u201cHelping Hands for Haiti.\u201d Students collected money during lunch periods last week and they may also donate shoes to Soles 4 Souls by calling (774) 200-3381 <\/strong><\/p>\n Jana Elementary School <\/strong>\u2013 \u201cHelping Hands.\u201d Students were encouraged to donate $1 to purchase Helping Hands through Jan 26. Students\u00a0 decorated construction paper hands and put them on display in the school\u2019s main hall. No limit to how many hands students may buy. Classroom that collects the most money will participate in a student versus staff activity later. <\/strong><\/p>\n Lawson Elementary School \u2013 <\/strong>\u201cChange for Haiti.\u201d Students collected pennies and other coins throughout January and money is funneled into a large water bottle to represent the need for fresh water in Haiti. Proceeds will go to the American Red Cross Relief Fund.<\/p>\n McCurdy Elementary School<\/strong> \u2013 Students collected\u00a0 first aid and personal hygiene items for an all-girls orphanage in Haiti \u2013 House of Hope \u2013 through Jan. 22.<\/p>\n McNair Elementary School \u2013 <\/strong>Between Jan. 25 and 27, the Student Council sold\u00a0 \u201cSmencils\u201d before school for $1. The proceeds will go to Service International. <\/strong><\/p>\n Russell Elementary School \u2013 <\/strong>\u201cPaws for Haiti.\u201d Through Jan. 29, students who donate $1, $5 or $10 will receive a paw, colored red, silver or gold. Student Council members will also greet classmates in the mornings as bell ringers and anyone who donates, regardless of the amount, receive a thank-you treat. <\/strong><\/p>\n Townsend Elementary School<\/strong> \u2013 \u201cHelping Hands for Haiti.\u201d Students who donate from January 25 through January 29 will receive a special ribbon to wear on Friday, Jan. 29 as well as receive a non-uniform day. Townsend staff members can donate $2 to dress down as well. <\/strong><\/p>\n Walker Elementary School \u2013 <\/strong>Student Council collected cash donations since Jan. 19.
