{"id":2949,"date":"2010-01-15T13:22:44","date_gmt":"2010-01-15T19:22:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.flovalleynews.com\/?p=2949"},"modified":"2010-01-15T13:22:44","modified_gmt":"2010-01-15T19:22:44","slug":"city-of-hazelwoods-recycling-program-going-strong","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/flovalleynews.com\/?p=2949","title":{"rendered":"City of Hazelwood\u2019s Recycling Program Going Strong"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Veolia Environmental Services reports that it has collected 120.83 tons of recyclables in December 2009 in Hazelwood, an increase of 32.45 tons over the amount for December 2008.\u00a0 This figure tops the previous record-breaking total of 96.97 tons in October 2008.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s great to see the strong support we\u2019re getting from residents for our recycling program,\u201d said David Stewart, PE, CPM, Director of Public Works\/City Engineer, City of Hazelwood. \u201cIn 2008, the City negotiated a contract with Veolia Environmental Services to provide a 65-gallon recycling cart to every one- and two-family residence in our community free of charge.\u00a0 Most of these carts were delivered last fall.\u00a0 This has made it easier for people to be more green-friendly and separate recycling items from their regular trash.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For the first nine months of 2008, recyclable collections averaged 28 tons per month in the City of Hazelwood.\u00a0 After residents received their recycling carts in October 2008, collections skyrocketed to an average of 90 tons per month for the last quarter.\u00a0 This produced an increase of approximately 223 percent.<\/p>\n<p>In 2009, the amount of recyclable tonnage collected from Hazelwood has nearly tripled on a monthly basis.\u00a0 The top producing months are as follows:\u00a0 December (120.83 tons); October (96.75 tons); November (88.43 tons); May (85.33 tons); and February (82.61 tons).<\/p>\n<p>According to Al Heinermann, Veolia\u2019s Municipal Market Representative, \u201cWe normally see an increase in recycling volumes in communities that utilize recycling carts. But Hazelwood\u2019s results are phenomenal, exceeding everyone\u2019s expectations.\u00a0 It\u2019s one of the largest percentage increases in recycling volumes collected that we\u2019ve seen from any municipality in the St. Louis area.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re proud of our residents for becoming more environmentally-conscious and supportive of the changes we\u2019ve made to the City\u2019s recycling program,\u201d said Mayor Matthew Robinson, City of Hazelwood.\u00a0 \u201cOur goal is to get more residents involved in efforts to recycle, reuse and conserve energy in order to
