“Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” is<\/strong><\/h1>\n

Fantastical at the Fabulous Fox<\/strong><\/h1>\n

I’m not a “Potterhead” by any stretch of the imagination. I’ve only seen the first Harry Potter movie. But I do know outstanding special effects and set design when I see them. “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” is a masterpiece of magical theater wizardry that spellbinds true Potterheads and Potter virgins alike. Even if you can’t completely follow the tale, you can sit back and enjoy sensory overload.<\/p>\n

Up until now, I thought “Back to the Future” had the greatest special effects I’ve ever seen on the Fabulous Fox stage, but I don’t have a clue how characters appeared and disappeared on stage, shooting flames crisscrossed the stage, costumes changed in an instant, and one character changed into another before our very eyes. The stage is black for most of the show, but the use of clocks with hands quickly spinning clockwise or counterclockwise, a multipurpose staircase, book shelves with secret doors and books that flip open their pages, and a variety of aerial stunts keep the sets moving and changing rapidly.<\/p>\n

The large cast, which creates all the wizardry wonders, is spectacular in delivering their long speeches with a British accent to making quick changes and transformations. Nick Dillenburg plays the adult Harry Potter, who is now grown up, married, and has a son named Albus (Adam Grant Morrison). As the story begins, we learn that Harry now works for the Ministry of Magic and Albus is getting ready to go off to Hogwarts, but after that, everything is a whirlwind in my mind. Albus teams up with Scorpius Malfoy (David Fine) in the train station and all the action explodes from there. Harry (Dillenburg), Ginny (Abbi Hawk), Hermione (Rachel Leslie), and Ron (Matt Harrington) are there, along with the next generation of wizards, to defeat the dark magic.<\/p>\n

The play by Jack Thorne opened in two parts on Broadway in 2018 and reopened after the pandemic in 2021 as a one part play. It then won six Tony Awards and nine Olivier Awards, including one for Best Play. This production of “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” is directed by John Tiffany. He performs his own brand of magic in directing this fast-paced play that depends on split-second timing from all the actors to achieve captivating results.<\/p>\n

When you go see this enchanting magical marvel, go early to get a good parking place and then be prepared to stand in long lines at the concession stand, restrooms, and souvenirs kiosk. Pottermania will be everywhere. The running time is nearly three hours with one 15-minute intermission. You can dress as one of the characters, if you like. You won’t be the only one.<\/p>\n
