{"id":2911,"date":"2010-01-05T13:04:59","date_gmt":"2010-01-05T19:04:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.flovalleynews.com\/?p=2911"},"modified":"2010-01-05T13:04:59","modified_gmt":"2010-01-05T19:04:59","slug":"eagle-days-2010-is-jan-16-17-at-the-old-chain-of-rocks-bridge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/flovalleynews.com\/?p=2911","title":{"rendered":"Eagle Days 2010 is Jan. 16 &#038; 17 At the Old Chain of Rocks Bridge"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2912\" title=\"bald eagle,pg10\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.flovalleynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/bald-eaglepg10-300x227.jpg?resize=300%2C227\" alt=\"bald eagle,pg10\" width=\"300\" height=\"227\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Bald eagle <\/strong>wintering along the Mississippi River. <strong>Jane Banaszek photo<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Those willing to brave a little cold weather will be rewarded with splendid views of America\u2019s national symbol, the bald eagle, at the fifteenth annual Eagle Days at the Old Chain of Rocks Bridge.\u00a0 This year the event takes place Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 16\u00a0 and 17 from 9-3 at The Old Chain of Rocks Bridge.<\/p>\n<p>Eagle Days features activities to entertain and educate the whole family about nature and history.<\/p>\n<p>Bald eagles travel south each winter to the St. Louis area seeking their favorite meal\u2014fish caught from the open waters of our big rivers.\u00a0 The rapids south of the bridge offer the raptors ideal fishing waters.\u00a0 Eagle Days visitors have an exceptional opportunity to view the birds up close through spotting scopes staffed by trained volunteers.\u00a0 The historic Old Chain of Rocks Bridge\u2014part of the legendary Route 66\u2014provides an excellent vantage point accessible to all ages.<\/p>\n<p>There will be a chance to see a bald eagle closer still at live eagle programs repeated every 20 minutes from 10\u00a0 a.m. to 2:40 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday, presented by the World Bird Sanctuary.\u00a0\u00a0 New this year will be special presentations on bird photography by local wildlife photographers Danny Brown and Jim Stokes at 9:00 a.m. each day in the program tent at the Missouri Bridge entrance.<\/p>\n<p>The event will also feature Lewis &amp; Clark re-enactors set up in a living history camp.\u00a0 Visitors can glimpse how the Corps of Discovery lived, cooked and made fire during their historic 1804-1806 voyage.\u00a0 The Lewis &amp; Clark State Historic Site will bring a replica of the boats used during the expedition to the Illinois entrance of the bridge.\u00a0 Called pirogues (peer-ROWs), these craft were hand-carved out of massive logs.\u00a0 The east side of the bridge will also offer an educational display by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources throughout the event.<\/p>\n<p>Those planning to attend Eagle Days are urged to dress for cold weather, and for safety considerations, leave pets at home.<\/p>\n<p>The Old Chain of Rocks Bridge is owned by the City of Madison, IL and was renovated in 1999 by Trailnet.\u00a0 It is one of the longest bridges exclusively for pedestrian and bicycle traffic in the nation.\u00a0 The bridge is one of the main attractions of The Confluence, a linked system of parks, historic sites, interpretive centers and multi-use trails developed in a unique partnership of public and private agencies.<\/p>\n<p>Eagles Days is made possible annually by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR), Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC), The Confluence Partnership and the City of Madison, IL .In addition to the partnering agencies this FREE program is produced in partnership with: Missouri Conservation Heritage Foundation, Metro-East Park &amp; Recreation District, Illinois Conservation Foundation, Pettus Foundation and US Bancorp Foundation.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bald eagle wintering along the Mississippi River.
