ORIC LINNEAN HOUSE REOPENS AT <\/strong><\/h1>\n

MISSOURI BOTANICAL GARDEN<\/strong> \"\"<\/a><\/h1>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>The historic Linnean House is once again open to the public at the Missouri Botanical Garden.\u00a0 The Linnean House was closed from May\u00a0through\u00a0this fall as it underwent extensive renovation to restore\u00a0the greenhouse to its original purpose\u00a0as an\u00a0orangerie.\u00a0Built in 1882, the Linnean House is the oldest continuously operating greenhouse west of the Mississippi.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Linnean House now represents the use of orangeries in 1882, when it was first built,\u201d said\u00a0Andrew\u00a0Wyatt, the Garden\u2019s Senior Vice President of Horticulture and Living Collections. \u201cBy then, orangeries had expanded from their original 16th-century purpose of growing tropical fruits. They became\u00a0showcases\u00a0for broader plant diversity, with a mix of rare and interesting species.\u201d<\/p>\n

Notable upgrades include new trellises added to the\u00a0north\u00a0wall that will allow for a display of climbing plants without harming the historic brick.\u00a0New botanical wall panels\u00a0create a stunning artistic\u00a0element,\u00a0showcasing\u00a0plants with historical connections\u00a0to\u00a0orangeries and examples of species\u00a0important to the Garden\u00a0work,\u00a0displayed in the style of\u00a0Victorian\u00a0ironwork.\u00a0Custom Wardian cases display unique artifacts that\u00a0tell the story of botanical collecting in both 1882 and the modern era.<\/p>\n

Plants\u00a0remain\u00a0the focal point of the Linnean House.\u00a0Displays\u00a0highlight the Garden\u2019s\u00a0historic collections, rare and important species, and seasonal beauty.<\/p>\n

\u201cMany of the plants recently displayed in the Linnean House returned after the renovation,\u201d Wyatt said.<\/p>\n

Right now, seasonal displays include a variety of\u00a0chrysanthemums.\u00a0In\u00a0November, those\u00a0will be\u00a0replaced with poinsettias.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Linnean House renovations were part of the Gateway to the Garden project.\u00a0The\u00a0Garden is working with Michael Vergason Landscape Architects (MVLA) on the project, the same designers\u00a0behind\u00a0the landscapes surrounding the Jack C. Taylor Visitor Center.\u00a0Arbolope\u00a0Studio serves as the lead local contractor for the project.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
