As the nights lengthen, and our collective thoughts turn with the seasons to death and what haunts the nights, ghost stories and horror grow in popularity. Bingeing old favorites and others I didn’t think so favorably of includes mostly scary-lite, a few occult-lite ones, and never-ever “walking dead” flicks, except ParaNorman. Here for your viewing pleasure are a few suggestions, grabbed from a bowl of cinematic Halloween confections.<\/p>\n

Bugonia<\/em> is worth seeing for those willing to venture out to the movie theater. Teddy (Jesse Plemons), who is conspiracy-obsessed, and his cousin, Don (Aidan Delbis), kidnap Michelle (Emma Stone), the CEO of a medical drug company, because Teddy believes she’s an alien trying to destroy the earth. Flashbacks, plot twists, and violence ensure to reveal the drug company’s culpability in Teddy’s mother’s coma and other surprises.<\/p>\n

RE-VISITATIONS:<\/p>\n

ParaNorman<\/em> (2012), Prime Video and remastered in 3D, which played in theaters October 25-28, 2025, is very high on my list of favorite Halloween flicks to watch all year. Although only Oscar-nominated, Liaka’s stop-motion-animated ParaNorman<\/em> remains a master piece of humor, horror, and palatable coming-of-age themes. FYI, ParaNorman<\/em> screams for family-oriented, kid-friendly participation a la Rocky Horror Picture Show<\/em>. What Halloween fun that would be!<\/p>\n

I rewatched Casper<\/em> (1995) on Netflix and found it scarier yet funnier and more life-affirming than I remembered. Another film I revisited was Ghost Story<\/em> (1981) on Prime. When the film came out, I was enamored with Peter Straub’s book, and I found the film adaptation disappointing because it skipped scenes I wanted to seeing on film. However, watching director John Irvin’s film now reveals a more compelling story than I saw through my disappointment.<\/p>\n

The Lady in White<\/em> (1988), available on Prime and for free on Tubi, should be a Halloween favorite for everyone. Excellent production values complement the frightening tale of grade-schooler Frankie (Lukas Haas), who is locked in a class cloakroom, where he witnesses the ectoplasmic murder of Melissa. Haunted by her ghost, Frankie hopes to reunite Melissa with her mother by uncovering the serial killer plaguing his small New York town. Scary and touching moments follow.<\/p>\n

The Haunting<\/em> (1963), which I have on DVD, is a very frightening, psychological horror film that will scare the audience not for the ghosts it depicts but for the terror of the unseen forces manipulating and “persuading” members of the psychic investigation team to join the house’s ghostly family. Simply the best adaptation of Shirley Jackson’s novella, this film is available with a TCM subscription or by buying or renting on other services.<\/p>\n

Director Billy Wilder’s Sunset Boulevard<\/em> (1950) is worth watching for its dark themes and the twisted Norma Desmond (Gloria Swanson). The beautiful play of light and shadow over textures in this consummate example of black and white cinematography emphasizes the textured and twisted psychology of humans on the edge of desperation, jealousy, and insanity. On Prime to buy or rent.<\/p>\n

For those craving a slasher film, I highly recommend Tucker & Dale vs Evil<\/em> (2010), and not just for its 12 wins & 14 nominations. Writers Eli Craig and Morgan Jurgensons flip the genre on its ear, resulting in humor and in the gore and panicking college students that every slasher film guarantees. Available on Hulu and Prime.<\/p>\n

No Halloween could be complete without revisiting some version of America’s first ghost story, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow<\/em>, in print or film. There are many versions available; however, my mother’s favorite, the 1980 made-for-TV one, starred Jeff Goldblum as exceptional Ichabod Crane. Unfortunately, this 1981 Primetime-Emmy-nominated adaptation is incredibly more difficult to find than it should be!<\/p>\n

So, as Halloween, Day of the Dead, and Daylight Savings Time converge as a Bermuda Triangle of Terror, enjoy as much horror as you dare while the dead, respectively, walk, visit, and turn in their graves.<\/p>\n
