STAGES St. Louis ‘Austen’s Pride’ Rewrites<\/strong><\/h1>\n

History With Charm, Wit and Imagination<\/strong><\/h1>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 by Pat Lindsey<\/strong><\/p>\n

Lindsay Warren Baker and Amanda Jacobs have created a charming hit musical with ‘Austen’s Pride’ that is, hopefully, Broadway-bound. The two women wrote the book, music and lyrics based on Jane Austen’s book, ‘Pride and Prejudice,’ and laced it with delightful wit, romance, lovely music, and elegance. It is definitely not a stuffy period piece. Under the direction of Igor Goldin and music director Sheela Ramesh, this adaptation of ‘Pride and Prejudice’ is sheer joy.<\/p>\n

The story begins when Jane Austen’s sister Cassandra (Dianica Phelan) excitedly brings Jane the news that her publisher is interested in another one of her manuscripts. Jane and Cassandra have been celebrating the success of her first book, ‘Sense and Sensibility.’ Jane (Olivia Hernandez) has only one completed book, “First Impressions,” which she believes is not suitable for publishing. With some coaxing from sister, Jane decides to read it again. As she reads, the characters come to life on the stage and the audience is drawn into the story.<\/p>\n

Jane is very expressive as she meets her characters. At times, we see her quill pen flying across the page making changes or writing new parts of the story. At other times, her characters seem to get a bit out of control and confront Jane, asking why she wrote a situation a certain way or insisting she change something. While she is writing, Jane is thinking about her own lost love and the cynicism that has replaced the romance in her life.<\/p>\n

Jane Austen became known for her character development, especially in “Pride and Prejudice.” Elizabeth Bennet (Delphi Borich) and Fitzwilliam Darcy (Dan Hoy) are her two most famous characters. This musical reveals the complexity of those characters by allowing them to interact with many of the other actors. Strong-willed Elizabeth also interacts with Jane when she doesn’t like the direction in which the story is going. When Jane finally puts down her quill pen, “First Impressions” has become “Pride and Prejudice.”<\/p>\n

I’ll have to admit that I’ve never read a Jane Austen book. The most I know about ‘Pride and Prejudice’ I learned from watching the movie, “You’ve Got Mail.” My intentions, however, were to keep an open mind and not have any expectations for this show. I’m really glad I did, because the humor was totally unexpected and laugh-out-loud funny.<\/p>\n

The cast couldn’t be more outstanding in every way. Their costumes by Emily Rebholz are period-perfect. They made an impressive stage set during the Netherfield Ball when the women, wearing colorful ball gowns, and the men, dressed in fine suits and leather boots, waltzed beneath a huge crystal chandelier.<\/p>\n

The music sounds like it belongs here, as do all the pitch perfect sopranos, but I didn’t go home humming any of the melodies. Mr. Darcy’s ( Hoy) song, “Fine Eyes,” and “When I Fall in Love” by Jane (Hernandez) and Elizabeth (Borich) stand out in my memory. From a comedy standpoint, Mr. Bennet ((Kevyn Morrow) singing “Silly Girls” and Caroline (Sarah Ellis) singing, “My Dearest Jane<\/p>\n

(First, Second, & Third Letter)” are also memorable.<\/p>\n

In my humble opinion, ‘Austen’s Pride’ will be ready for Broadway just as soon as it completes its eight-city tour. It’s entertaining from beginning to end, with loads of laughs in between. Audiences everywhere will embrace its originality and adore its characters.
