The Hazelwood Central High School Student Council was elected to serve as 2010-2011 president of the Gateway District of Missouri Association of Student Councils, making the school\u2019s council responsible for planning, coordinating and hosting the district conference in November 2010.<\/p>\n
The Gateway District serves councils in St. Louis City, St. Louis County, and St. Charles and Jefferson counties. It is open to public and private middle, junior and senior high schools.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think it\u2019s a big honor,\u201d said Katie Wayne, English teacher and co-sponsor for Student Council.\u00a0 \u201cThe students know it\u2019s an honor and it\u2019s a good motivator to keep them aiming higher.\u201d<\/p>\n
Through a nomination and voting process, members of the HCHS Student Council campaigned vigorously at the 2009 conference, held at Webster Groves High School in November. The campaign included posters, detailed explanations of the school\u2019s community service projects, T-shirts, candy and a skit performance.<\/p>\n
The skit was written by Ezra Anderson, a senior, and vice president of student council. He explained that there was an outer space theme so they went with the idea of \u201cexploring the unknown to find something different.\u201d The council used Buzz Lightyear of Disney\u2019s movie \u201cToy Story\u201d for inspiration. They designed a costume out of cardboard to wear onstage in depiction of Lightyear.<\/p>\n
\u201cThree other schools are officer schools with specific responsibilities to help with the conference, but the majority of the responsibility falls with Hazelwood Central because we are the host school,\u201d the sponsors said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe cool part about the day is there is a lot of sharing of ideas to make all student councils stronger,\u201d said Brown.<\/p>\n
The 2010-2011 officer schools supporting Hazelwood Central High are Fort Zumwalt East High School, first vice-president; Parkway Northeast Middle School, second vice-president; and Wentzville Timberland High School, secretary.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
