{"id":2791,"date":"2009-12-01T13:46:39","date_gmt":"2009-12-01T19:46:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.flovalleynews.com\/?p=2791"},"modified":"2009-12-01T13:46:39","modified_gmt":"2009-12-01T19:46:39","slug":"dining-divas-try-out-a-no-holds-barred-menu-at-the-bleeding-deacon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/flovalleynews.com\/?p=2791","title":{"rendered":"Dining Divas Try Out a No Holds Barred Menu at the Bleeding Deacon"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Lisa Kampeter<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to the Double-Tongued Dictionary, a \u201cbleeding deacon\u201d is a person who \u201cbelieves himself indispensable to a group\u2026who acts like the sole source of wisdom.\u201d\u00a0 According to Mike the Bartender, a \u201cbleeding deacon\u201d is a \u201cknow-it-all\u201d\u2026or a really cool South City public house.<\/p>\n<p>This month\u2019s Dining Divas outing ventured away from our safety zone.\u00a0 When deciding on where to dine this month, I came across a place that wouldn\u2019t be considered typical of the restaurants we choose.\u00a0 One that perhaps might frighten a few of the girls.\u00a0 But I figured if I already got them to a biker bar (okay, so Triumph Grill is not a biker bar but it is named after a motorcycle!), I may be successful with a place that has a form of the word \u201cblood\u201d in its name.<\/p>\n<p>I convinced the Divas to try out The Bleeding Deacon on Chippewa at Gravois.\u00a0 One of the first comments I got was \u201cwhat kind of place are you getting us into again?\u201d\u00a0 Perhaps the dark ambience wasn\u2019t comforting.\u00a0 Perhaps the neighborhood pub atmosphere wasn\u2019t what they were expecting.\u00a0 And perhaps after taking one look at the tattoo-covered bartender, this wasn\u2019t the kind of place the Divas enjoyed dining.<\/p>\n<p>But as soon as we got to talking to Mike the Bartender, everyone\u2019s attitude changed.\u00a0 There\u2019s no better way to put it.\u00a0 Mike is awesome.\u00a0 Tattoos and all, we found him extremely charming and adorable.\u00a0 Who needed a menu to look at when we had Mike.<\/p>\n<p>And to add to the fabulous treat behind the bar, The Bleeding Deacon jukebox rocks.\u00a0 The Smiths.\u00a0 Kate Bush.\u00a0 Johnny Cash.\u00a0 David Bowie.\u00a0 It\u2019s easy to see why this jukebox has been voted the favorite by the <em>Riverfront Times Best Of <\/em>poll.\u00a0 Plus, you have to love when you go into the restroom, instead of seeing pictures of outdated 1980s male models plastered to the walls, you see Billy Idol.<\/p>\n<p>At The Bleeding Deacon, you\u2019re not going to find your typical bar food.\u00a0 It\u2019s more \u201cno holds barred.\u201d Curly Dog with spicy Brussels-Sprouts slaw.\u00a0 Meatloaf Sliders.\u00a0 Sweet Potato Salsa with tortilla chips.\u00a0 These aren\u2019t menu items from your average bar and grill.\u00a0 You have to be adventurous.\u00a0 This night, the Divas weren\u2019t too risky.<\/p>\n<p>We all enjoyed sharing the Southern Fried Corn Fritters.\u00a0 Even one of the Picky Divas tried this and liked them.\u00a0 A couple Divas tried the Wedge Salad and were surprised to find a fried egg on top.\u00a0 They were definitely disappointed in this twist to the salad.<\/p>\n<p>But that\u2019s where the adventure in menu-ordering ended.\u00a0 Instead of trying unique items, everyone ordered a Black Angus Burger.\u00a0 The burgers were likened to O\u2019Connell\u2019s, known for having the best burgers in town.\u00a0 One Diva did order outside of the group.\u00a0 She went with the Charbroiled Chicken Sandwich.\u00a0 Risky!
