In an effort to increase seat belt use and reduce fatalities\u00a0 and injuries on local roadways, the Hazelwood Police Department will be participating in the\u00a0 observance of Occupant Protection Enforcement Day, scheduled for Nov. 18,\u00a0 announced Hazelwood Police Chief Carl Wolf.<\/p>\n
The Hazelwood Police Department is committed to increasing safety belt enforcement while\u00a0 conducting regular traffic stops during this special public safety observance.\u00a0 It\u2019s a part of an\u00a0 aggressive \u201cClick It or Ticket\u201d state-wide mobilization campaign to crack down on\u00a0 Missouri\u2019s safety belt law violators and to reduce highway fatalities.<\/p>\n
Failure to wear a seat belt while driving is against the law and can lessen the chances of\u00a0 surviving a serious motor vehicle crash.\u00a0 In 2007, a driver in a Missouri traffic accident had a\u00a0 1 in 32 chance of being killed if they weren\u2019t wearing a seat belt.\u00a0 In cases where the driver\u00a0wore a seat belt, their chance of being killed was 1 in 1,294.<\/p>\n
Studies have show that those who are least likely to buckle up include young males,\u00a0nighttime drivers, pickup truck drivers and their passengers, as well as people who live in\u00a0 rural areas.<\/p>\n
\u201cRegular safety belt use is the single most effective way to protect people and reduce\u00a0fatalities in motor vehicle crashes,\u201d said Chief Wolf.<\/p>\n
