It doesn\u2019t take much to convince me to have Mexican for dinner. And even though we had a Dining Diva complain that we\u2019d just had Mexican in May, when you do the math, that\u2019s 84 days! That\u2019s a long time, so we decided to have Mexican again, and this time we went to Uncle Julio\u2019s in Frontenac.
\nPrior to this outing, I had never heard of Uncle Julio\u2019s. But since then, I had a friend ask to meet up there, another who said she\u2019d just gone, and yet another who was talking about going there. And this was just in one month.
\nUncle Julio\u2019s is just past Plaza Frontenac on Lindbergh, right near Lifetime Fitness, the luxury health club. It makes sense. Most people always overeat when having Mexican. Nice to have a gym close by…to drive by\u2026because you know you\u2019re not stopping after overindulging on chips. Maybe after a workout, you don\u2019t feel quite so guilty chowing down on chips and guacamole and margaritas.
\nUncle Julio\u2019s felt more like Tuscany than Mexico City. But that was okay by us. And they have a nice outdoor patio that we said \u201cnext time\u201d to because it was a little too warm this evening. I\u2019m not sure what happened to our friendly, young waiter as he was replaced by an older gentleman. We thought that maybe he got off early, but we saw him waiting on other tables throughout the night. We guessed the older guy had a better grasp on how to deal with a group of more mature women. One thing was for sure. Our new waiter turned on the charm and was very attentive to the Italian Diva.
\nThe Retired Diva is not enjoying being so busy all the time. The Working Divas listened with envy as she talked about an upcoming Florida trip that she worried was going to be cancelled. The weather was the excuse the airline was using with regards to cancellations, but we agreed, it was probably lack of employees.(story on her trip in this week’s issue) She also talked about the amazing tour she had of the St. Louis Public Library and her visit to an urban farm in the middle of the city.
\nThe Traveling Diva worried also about her travels that weekend to the Sunshine State because of the increase in COVID cases. We didn\u2019t realize until later that the texts and calls that weren\u2019t being made to her were regarding that trip. No go on Florida. Change of plans.
\nThe Creative Diva brought a summertime-themed basket for raffling with everything
\n\u201cwatermelon\u201d. Plates,
\nnapkins, food nets, a Lisa Kampeter
\nparing knife, and of course, a watermelon. The money we raised on the raffle donations will go to a charity to be named later.
\nUnfortunately, we had a couple Accidental Divas who couldn\u2019t join us. One took a fall and wasn\u2019t able to make it, and the other\u2019s daughter was involved in a fender bender and was all shook up.
\nIn my household, there is a debate as to whether Chevy\u2019s chips and salsa are any good, and from my perspective, definitely! Uncle Julio\u2019s chips reminded me of theirs, so add on some Queso Blanco, and you have a real good chance you\u2019re going to be full before your dinner arrives.
\nIt didn\u2019t help that the Generous Diva ordered appetizers including the Chicken Quesadilla, which we really enjoyed. Of course, after that, I didn\u2019t need anything else, but that didn\u2019t stop me. I ordered the Steak Bowl with vegetables and rice because in my head, it was the \u201chealthier\u201d option. Unfortunately, Uncle Julio\u2019s menu also included the calories of the entrees. What a way to ruin a meal!
\nRarely, do I go to a Mexican restaurant and think it\u2019s any better than other Mexican restaurants. Uncle Julio\u2019s was no exception. It was an enjoyable night with good food and great conversation. But the Generous Diva also discovered\u2026it had a big price tag. Big for Mexican food. So that was disappointing to her. But not enough to keep her from returning.
