If You Can Dream It, Can You Be It? <\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

   When I was a little feller, I had this recurring\ndream. It always seemed to come when I had a fever. I would be sitting on the\nscreened-in back porch and up in the gray sky was a black dot flying back and\nforth. It got closer and closer, bigger and bigger, until I saw this ugly witch\non a broom, flowing black robes, pointy hat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    She\u2019d fly right up to the window and stare\nat me with red-hot-glowing eyes, and then\u2026 I\u2019d wake up to touch of my mom\u2019s\ncool hand on my burning forehead. I still get the chill-bumps thinking about\nthat old hag. Ahhhhh! It was clearly a \u2018bad dream\u2019, a \u2018nightmare\u2019, one of those\nmoments that play out in our sleep due to stress, physical and emotional. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

  Some people have them all the time,\nespecially those who have had the misfortune of trauma. Others, not so much,\nbut they are a part of our brain function. ,\u201cTo sleep, perchance to dream,\u201d\nsaid the tortured Hamlet. Songs like \u2018Dream Lover\u2019, I Had A Dream\u2019, \u2018The\nImpossible Dream\u2019 imply a quality apart from the normal to these happenstances.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Ella Fitzgerald and Doris Day and Mama\nCass all asked us to \u2018Dream a Little Dream of Me.\u2019 The saying goes \u2018If you can\nDream it, you can Be it.\u2019 Well, last night, I dreamed I was a priest. Odds are,\nthat ain\u2019t gonna come true, right? And I could dream all night about doing\nheart surgery, but you wouldn\u2019t want to be my patient. What exactly are these\nmental ruminations that come to us in our nocturnal state? Visions of the\nfuture?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Resolutions of past events? Visits from\nthose beyond this earthly realm? Dreams have been the subject of study\nthroughout history. Sigmund Freud was a believer in the dream as a great teller\nof personality. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Native Americans attributed mystical\nqualities to their nighttime mental sojourns. Technically speaking, a dream is\na function of the brain wherein it processes and allows for learning and\nunderstanding during its non-conscious mode. In dream-state, most usually\nduring the Rapid Eye Movement phase, that fun part of the brain called the\nAmygdala is very active. This is the center of the flight or flight instinct\nand emotional processing. It takes over from the other chunks of brain matter\ndevoted to logic, planning and problem solving. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    And creativity seems to be juiced up as\nwell. Paul McCartney is said to have come up with the tune for \u201cYesterday\u201d in a\ndream. Makes sense, right?    There are\nsome studies that indicate dreams are cross-cultural. Many around the globe\nreport dreams of flying, being lost, showing up late, and amazingly, being\nnaked in public. Can\u2019t recall ever having one of those, but I do remember\nstanding in my Fruit of the Loom\u2019s at a baseball game. (In a dream, of course.\nLet me be clear about that. Geez!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 Men apparently dream differently than women.\nGuys, not surprisingly, dream of action and physical activity. Also (how does\none say this in a family newspaper?) \u2026 sex. Again, not surprisingly. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

 Women\u2019s dreams trend to the emotional, fear of\nexclusion and loss and, get this, issues that relate to clothes and fashion.\nYeah, that\u2019s what some say. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

   Did you ever dream you couldn\u2019t find your\ncar? Normal. That you\u2019re flying or falling, or late for class? Yep, common.\nLoved ones showing up, either to give advice or just \u2018be there?\u2019 Also not\nuncommon, although anytime my ma and pa make an appearance, they are just\nsmiling, and offer a calming presence. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

 Dreams can be what one researcher calls \u2018good\nemotional first aid for the brain.\u2019 And it can give us some crazy stories to\ntell in the morning! \u2018Dream On, Dream Weaver.\u2019 \u2018Dare to Dream\u2019 and \u2018Follow your\nDreams.\u2019So jammie-up, sleep tight and\u2026 Sweet Dreams!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
