With the Holidays Upon Us, Movies Offer an Ideal Escape<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The holidays are a wonderful time and a lot of work, and when one\nneeds a break and still needs to socialize, going to a movie can be the perfect\nescape. This holiday season offers many films that promise to take one away,\nand delightfully so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The March sisters go to a beach picnic, and romance is in the air!<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Although release dates are changing fast, films opening Dec. 20\ninclude the newest installment in the famed saga, Star Wars: The Rise\nof Skywalker<\/em>, the film version of the famed musical, Cats<\/em>, and the expos\u00e9 Bombshell<\/em>. Alas, director Sam\nMendes\u2019 WWI film, 1917<\/em>, has been rescheduled to open Jan. 10 in St. Louis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker<\/em><\/strong>, although still\nshrouded the mystery, promises to be the final chapter of the Skywalker saga in\nwhich the surviving Resistance facing the First Order again. Lots of\ncomputer-generated effects, space battles, and drama are also promised by director\nJ.J. Abrams, who has directed both Star Wars<\/em> and Star Trek <\/em>films Stars Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, Billie Lourd, and Keri\nRussell. Rated PG-13 for sci-fi violence and action and running 141 minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cats<\/em><\/strong>,<\/em> the film, brings the story of Jellicles to the big screen, and\nDirector Tom Hooper\u2019s adaptation brings big-screen magic to the famous Broadway\nCats<\/em> musical based on the\nwork of Andrew Lloyd Webber which was inspired by a collection of poems by T.\nS. Eliot. The Jellicles clowder decides which one of them will ascend to the\nHeaviside Layer and come back to a new Jellicle life. The dump where the\nJellicles live houses the white cat Victoria (Francesca Hayward), Old\nDeuteronomy (Judi Dench) who will decide which cat will be chosen, the\nmysterious Mr. Mistoffelees (Laurie Davidson), the rocker star Rum Tum Tugger\n(Jason Derulo), the refined Bustopher Jones (James Corden), Grizabella\n(Jennifer Hudson), Macavity (Idris Elba), Jennyanydots (Rebel Wilson), Gus (Ian\nMcKellen) and Bombalurina (Taylor Swift). An all-star cast promises a great\nmusical escape, which families can enjoy. Rated PG for some rude and suggestive\nhumor and running 110 minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Director Jay Roach\u2019s Bombshell<\/em><\/strong> goes behind the scene\nof Roger Ailes\u2019 running of Fox News. While the title is both about the\nbeautiful blonde women Ailes (John Lithgow) employed and sexually harassed or\nabused, and the women who ultimately challenged him, and the network\u2019s blind\nallegiances regardless. When Megyn Kelly (Charlize Theron) challenges Donald\nTrump, younger victims of Ailes\u2019 bullying, represented by Katya Pospisil\n(Margot Robbie) a fictional composite, feel empowered to challenge Ailes and\nthe Fox network. Nicole Kidman stars as Gretchen Carlson. Rated R for sexual\nmaterial and language throughout; 108 minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The films opening Christmas week include the beautiful and\nsurprising Little Women<\/em>, the animated Spies in Disguise<\/em>, and the dramatic The Song of Names.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Little Women<\/em><\/strong> <\/em>(2019) The first reaction might be \u201cDo we need another version of Little<\/em> Women<\/em>?\u201d The answer is a\ndefinitive \u201cYes, we do \u2014 especially this one!\u201d Writer\/director Greta Gerwig\ndrives deeper into Louisa May Alcott\u2019s famed novel and opens the story up\nemotionally as no one has before by giving each an entire life that shines\nthrough the casts\u2019 exceptionally human portrayals of the familiar characters. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Saoirse Ronan as Jo and Timothe?e Chalamet as Laurie in Little Women<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Set during and after the Civil War, the story of Jo March, the\nwriter in the family, finds inspiration in the lives of her sisters, Meg (Emma\nWatson), Amy (Florence Pugh), and Beth (Eliza Scanlen), and best friend Laurie\n(Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet). She and her sisters are challenged and supported by their\nsaintly mother, Marmee (Laura Dern), and pompous, curmudgeonly Aunt March\n(Meryl Streep). Even Amy, who wins Laurie\u2019s heart, gets a fair shake in\nGerwig\u2019s adaptation in this quintessential story of American women and American\nlife. The rivalries, shared experiences, and love between the sisters are\npalpable and exciting, ringing true for all sisters. Gerwig brings a profound\nand moving exploration of young womanhood and coming of age to the screen. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although some might shed a few tears, Greta Gerwig\u2019s Little Women <\/em>is definitely not a\ntearjerker, and this reviewer loathes tearjerkers for their manipulativeness. Little Women<\/em> is rated PG for\nthematic elements and brief smoking, and it runs a delish 134 minutes. Gerwig\u2019s\nfilm version of Little Women <\/em>is gorgeous in every way, from costumes, settings, cinematography,\nmusic, and editing to the acting and direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spies in Disguise,<\/em><\/strong> directors Nick Bruno and Troy Quane\u2019s animated film, promises fun\nand funny stuff just like any Disney adventure film for the family. Suave Lance\nSterling (voice of Will Smith), the world\u2019s top spy, usually gets all the\nglory. Until on a mission to catch evil mastermind Killian (Ben Mendelsohn),\nLance turns himself into a pigeon \u2014 technically speaking \u2014 by hastily drinking\nthe new formula prepared by Walter Beckett (voice of Tom Holland), a dorky yet\nbrilliant, teenaged whiz-kid version of James Bond\u2019s Q, who advocates for\nnon-violence. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now the mismatched duo must take on Lance\u2019s latest mission\ntogether. When the agency thinks that Lance has gone rogue, agents Jenkins\n(Reba McEntire) and Marcy (Rashida Jones) must bring him in. The film has a\nmessage about the evils of technology. Rated PG for action, violence, and rude\nhumor and runs 141 minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Song of Names,<\/em><\/strong> director Fran\u00e7ois Girard\u2019s moving and powerful detective film\nabout brotherly love, also has a musical focus, just as his film The Red Violin<\/em> did. Shortly before\nthe Nazis invaded Poland in World War II, Martin (Misha Handley) suddenly has a\nroommate when his father Gilbert (Stanley Townsend), a music publisher, invites\nDovidl (Luke Doyle), a young Jewish violin prodigy from Poland, to live with\nhis family. While the two boys form a brotherly affection in WWI London, Dovidl\nbecomes a world-class violinist of genius status. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then, on the eve of his debut, Dovidl disappears, and Gilbert asks\nMartin to find Dovidl, who seems to have vanished. Like Harry Lime in The Third Man<\/em>, Dovidl becomes the\nfocus of Martin\u2019s life until 35 years later the aging Martin (Tim Roth),\ndetermined to find his lost friend and brother, goes on a final quest to find\nDovidl (Clive Owens). Dovidl\u2019s search for the fate of his parents and sisters\nmay play a part in his disappearance. Girard\u2019s dramatic film questions the\nmeaning of loss of self and connections and disappearances from history. Rated\nPG-13 for some strong language, brief sexual material, thematic elements, and\nsmoking; runs 113 minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
