HIGH ROLLER HAS NEW MEANING<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

 Recalling several visits\nover the years to Las Vegas, the one thing that stands out is the always\nchanging landscape of this sprawling metropolis. There\u2019s always something new\nto blend with vintage Las Vegas.    <\/p>\n\n\n\n

   I hadn\u2019t been there for\nalmost a decade, but my wife had been there on a girls trip four years ago and\nthus I knew about some of the new attractions, hotel-casinos and out-of- town\nplaces to visit.  On previous trips, we\nalways tried to fit in a visit to one of the scenic \u201cout-of-town\u201d attractions\nsuch as the Valley of Fire, Red Rock Canyon, Grand Canyon West, Mt. Charleston,\nHoover Dam and Lake Mead.  Heck, one time\nwe drove all the way from Las Vegas to Zion National Park in Utah with our\ntravel friends.    <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Our  recent Las Vegas trip for four days in late\nOctober didn\u2019t allow us time for out-of town \nexplorations. We decided to concentrate on the many new experiences in\ntown,  which included Halloween night and\nplenty of bizarre costumes and sights\u2014some \nwould  need  to be classified as R  for anyone with kids.     <\/p>\n\n\n\n

   One of the best bargains\nwe found online was a visit to the Venetian Resort Hotel for the Grand Trio\npackage at $75 per person.  It included\na  sparkling clear water gondola ride on\nthe Venetian lake, an Italian meal at Buddy V\u2019s Ristorante in the Grand Canal\nShoppes and tickets to the famed Madame Tussaud\u2019s Wax Museum. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

   The museum has\ndramatically changed since our last visit with the  addition of movie, theater, and sports stars\nfrom recent decades.  Elvis continues to\nbe a mainstay, (photo below)  but he is\nnow in good company with George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Jennifer Aniston, Jennifer\nLopez, Robert De Niro, the Spice Girls, Molly Cyrus, Michael Jordan, and many,\nmany more celebrities.  Allow an hour or\nmore to take it all in.  And be sure to\nsee the 4D super heroes film that is also part of the package.      <\/p>\n\n\n\n

   It\u2019s always interesting\nto check out the changing interiors of the big hotel casinos such as Caesar\u2019s\nPalace, Paris, Bellagio, and the City Center complex on The Strip (see story on\nFoodie tour at left)  ) and compare and\ncontrast them to the older hotels on Fremont Street in Downtown Las Vegas.    <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Having recently ridden\nthe big St. Louis Wheel (don\u2019t call it Ferris) at Union Station St. Louis, we\nwanted to be sure to ride the High Roller in Vegas, which, at 590 feet,  is currently the tallest wheel in the\nworld.  The High Roller  (right photo) moves at only one foot per\nsecond and its pods can hold up to 20 people each.  It doesn\u2019t stop to let you on or off, but\ngoes slowly enough that riders can walk on and off while it\u2019s moving.  The views of the city and vast surrounding\narea at night are breathtaking, but not really scary.  It\u2019s about a half-hour ride and a great way\nto end the evening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

LAS VEGAS HAS IT FOR EXTENDED WEEKEND GETAWAYS, INCLUDING A 1-RING CIRCUS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

My most profound takeaway, which shouldn\u2019t have surprised me, was\nhow much more expensive the city has become. \nGone are the inexpensive buffets and show tickets.  You have to look closely to find the deals of\nold Las Vegas such a cheap, but quality hotel buffets, reasonably priced show\ntickets with a little less variety than many of our previous trips, and lodging\nis more Tickets to see Lady Gaga ranged from $400 to $6,000!  Obviously, we didn\u2019t see her show.  There are deals on hotel stays, but some come\nwith stipulations.     <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    We signed up for a\n4-star hotel package (at the Westin Resort) online that was listed at $140 for\nthree nights, but it came with an additional cost of $35 per night resort fee\nand a required two-hour orientation tour (which was actually three hours).  For our time listening to the sales pitch for\nvacation ownership, we were given tickets to one of the hottest new shows in\ntown, ABSINTHE, a European style one-ring circus held in a large tent on the\ngrounds of Caesars Palace.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

   The outstanding performances\nincluded multi skilled tap dancers, \nroller skaters, trapeze artists, and more. They were so close to our\nseats that we could almost touch them and almost did on one occasion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 We enjoyed the performers\nand their amazing skills, but could have done without the over-the-top raunchy\ncomedians, which included the ringmaster and his foul-mouth assistant. We were\nforewarned about the language, so it wasn\u2019t a shock and show itself was worth\nit.    <\/p>\n\n\n\n

   One of the smartest\ndecisions we made was to not rent a car in Las Vegas.  The traffic is horrendous and Uber or Lyft\nare much more convenient and economical and rarely do you wait longer than 4-5\nminutes.  For transportation to and from\nthe airport, a prepaid airport van ticket is the way to go.    <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    We celebrated our last\nday in Las Vegas with an amazing all-you-can eat brunch buffet at Le Village in\nthe Paris Resort & Casino.  We had a\n$25 discount from our orientation tour, so brunch for two ended up being only\n$40, including unlimited mimosas.  Since\nwe weren\u2019t driving, we could indulge! We had a leisurely meal, taking time to\nsample breakfast and lunch foods that were both International and\nAmerican.  Then, it was off to the\nairport in our scheduled van for our three-hour flight back to St. Louis. All\nwe needed for the flight were a few Southwest Airline snacks.      <\/p>\n\n\n\n

  As always, we crammed as\nmuch as we could in a few days in this adult playground and and brought back\nmemories of Vegas past trips and added a new chapter.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
