Awards Season Begins in Earnest<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Familiar favorites Morticia, Grandma, Gomez, Wednesday, Uncle Fester, Pugsley and Lurch are voiced, respectively, Charlize Theron, Bette Midler, Oscar Isaac, Chlo\u00eb Grace Moretz, Nick Kroll, Finn Wolfhard, and Conrad Vernon in ‘The Addams Family.’ <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

For some, Autumn means crisp weather, colorful trees, mums on the porch, or early holiday prep. Of course, the ad nauseam pumpkin spice appears on every sign and label like frost on the proverbial squash. For me, Autumn is the beginning of the rush to Award Season and lots of time at the movies. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first screener\narrived this week to remind me that some films which came out earlier in the\nyear deserve consideration; however, the big news is the films held for release\nin the fall. October offers a repast of potential nominees for the many awards\ncoming soon from organizations large and small, and the week of October 11 sees\nthe opening of The Addams Family<\/em> (United Artists Releasing), Gemini\nMan<\/em> (Paramount), Jexi<\/em> (Lionsgate), Lucy In The Sky<\/em> (Fox\nSearchlight), and El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie<\/em> (Netflix).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Addams Family<\/em><\/strong> throws its hat into the ring of\ncompetition for the Best Animated Feature against earlier releases such as The\nLion King<\/em> and Toy Story 4<\/em>, among others. This version of The\nAddams Family<\/em> keeps the characteristic theme song of the 1960s TV series\nand returns to the more macabre humor of Charles Addams, who created his\ncommentary on modern suburban life in cartoons printed in The New Yorker<\/em>.\nCharlize Theron, Bette Midler, and Snoop Dogg provide the voices of Morticia,\nGrandma, Cousin It, respectively. The star-studded cast will help in the film’s\nbid for nominations if it gets a box office bump. Rated PG for macabre and\nsuggestive humor, and some action. 87 min.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Will Smith plays dual roles in ‘Gemini Man.’ <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

On the other hand,\nfamed director Ang Lee’s Gemini Man<\/em><\/strong>\nseems destined for only technical awards for its groundbreaking use of\ntechnology. Seeing Gemini Man<\/em> in 3D and projected at twice the usual\nrate provides a peek at the stunning future for action films. Will Smith fans\nwill get a double dose of the star because he plays both Henry Brogan and\nJunior; fortunately, the buzz indicates that more energy was spent on the\ntechnology than the script and direction. Rated PG-13 for violence and action\nthroughout, and brief strong language. 117 min.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Adam Devine as Phil and Alexandra Shipp as Cate in ‘Jexi.’ <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

A sleeper in the\nscript department and other non-best picture categories might just be Jexi<\/em><\/strong>. As a comedy, Jexi<\/em>\ndoesn’t stand a snowball chance in a St Louis summer of winning Best Picture\nbecause comedies never do. The film’s social commentary about humans’\nincreasing addiction to their smartphones, however, might just get it some\nnominations for intellectual categories such as writing, direction, and\nediting, providing the trailer didn’t give away all the best bits. Adam Devine\nstars as Phil, whose new smartphone Jexi (the voice of Rose Byrne) gets jealous\nand makes life miserable, especially after he falls for Cate (Alexandra Shipp).\nThe trailer makes the film look like a hoot. Rated R for strong\/crude sexual\ncontent and language throughout, some drug use and graphic nudity. Length\nunknown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Natalie Portman as Lucy Cola and Jon Hamm as Mark Goodwin in ‘Lucy in the Sky.’ <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Lucy In The Sky<\/em><\/strong> is another film that uses space travel\nas a metaphor for emotional and psychological issues, joining films like Gravity<\/em>\nin this special exploration of space. Natalie Portman plays Lucy Cola, a female\nastronaut who will do anything to get back to space because she was so deeply\nmoved by the transcendent experience of seeing her life from afar. Local boy\nmade good, Jon Hamm also stars. Although another film with the technical street\ncred to score a few nominations in these categories, with the promised theme of\na woman’s descent into madness, Lucy In The Sky <\/em>may also garner acting,\nwriting, or directing nods. Rated R for language and some sexual content. 124\nmin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Charles Baker as Jesse Pinkman in ‘El Camino: A Breaking Bad.’ <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

For those who need\nmore Breaking Bad<\/em>, Netflix is servicing up a feature-length fix of the\nshow in El Camino: A Breaking Bad\nMovie<\/em><\/strong>, which will only stream locally although it could be in\ncontentions for awards if it is opened in theaters in New York and LA, as many\nfilms by the established studios and distributors are. Aaron Paul reprises his\nbreakout role as Jesse Pinkman in the long-running AMC series. After escaping\nJack and his gang, Jesse goes on the run from the police and tries to escape\nhis own inner turmoil. Rating unknown. 122 min.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As I look forward to\nthe Autumn technicolor of films, the scent of buttered popcorn, and\nnominations, I’ll think of Indian Summer, caramel apples, and jumping in piles\nof leaves between movies and, of course, during the upcoming St. Louis\nInternational Film Festival.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
