STEM EXPO SET FOR SEPT. 7-8<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

The Spirit of St. Louis Air Show and STEM Expo will take place on Sept. 7-8, 10 a.m. \u2013 5 p.m. both days at the Spirit of St. Louis Airport. The U.S. Navy Blue Angels will appear along with the Royal Air Force Red Arrows, one of Europe\u2019s premier jet aerobatic teams at the 2019 Spirit of St. Louis Air Show & STEM Expo, one of only three air shows worldwide where the two world-class teams will perform together.<\/p>\n

Other performers include the U.S. Air Force F-22 Raptor, Skip Stewart, a Boeing B-17G Flying Fortress and a Supermarine Spitfire. Another important aspect of the event is the interactive STEM Expo, where young people can experience the excitement of science, technology, engineering and math and how it can empower them in the future. ST. LOUIS RECAST REQUESTS PROPOSALS FOR <\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

COMMUNITY PROJECTS DUE SEPT. 13<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

The St. Louis County Department of Public Health (DPH) has issued four requests for proposals (RFPs) on behalf of St. Louis ReCAST (Resiliency in Communities After Stress and Trauma), a program working to improve local communities by funding micro-grants in the St. Louis Promise Zone.<\/p>\n

The Promise Zone is a federally designated area in North St. Louis City and County that encompasses 11 wards in North St. Louis City and 28 municipalities in North St. Louis County.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

DPH is accepting bids from organizations interested in projects that promote ReCAST\u2019s main priorities: youth engagement, mental health, peer support and violence prevention.<\/p>\n

Up to $75,000 in federal grant money will be awarded in each of those categories using participatory budgeting \u2013 a democratic process in which Promise Zone community members vote on how to spend the ReCAST funds.<\/p>\n

7TH ANNUAL SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL SEPT. 13-14<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

The Shakespeare Festival, St. Louis’ renowned Shakespeare in the Streets program, is back for a seventh year with an adaptation of As You Like It<\/em> entitled \u201cLove At the River’s Edge\u201d on Sept.13-14. This year the neighborhood partnership involves two communities: one in Calhoun County, IL and the second in North St. Louis County.<\/p>\n

The performances will begin at 7 p.m. outside the 24:1 Coffee House\/Cafe at the intersection of Page and Ferguson. After Act 1, the cast and audience will journey together by bus and on the Golden Eagle Ferry from North St. Louis County, across the river to Calhoun County. The second act of the production will take place on the riverbank with the Mississippi River as the backdrop. The entire experience including travel will take approximately three hours.<\/p>\n

Shakespeare in the Streets is underwritten by the PNC Foundation through PNC Arts Alive, a multi-year initiative dedicated to supporting visual and performing arts with generous support from the Whitaker Foundation, National Endowment for the Arts: Creativity Connects, the Strive Fund, and Moneta Group. The project is presented in partnership with Beyond Housing, the Normandy Schools Collaborative and Brussels High School.<\/p>\n

CITY, POST 444, ATONEMENT TO HOLD <\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

VETERANS CHARITY EVENT SEPT. 14<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

Mayor Tim Lowery announced that the City of Florissant, the Florissant American Legion Post 444 and the Atonement Lutheran Men\u2019s Club are co-sponsoring a Veteran Charity event to benefit the Camp Hope USA organization. This will be a two- day event to be held on Saturday, Sept.14-15 at the Atonement Lutheran Church located at 1285 N. New Florissant Road.<\/p>\n

On Saturday, Sept. 14 at noon, the American Legion Post 444 will have their honor guard in attendance and will be doing a 21-Gun salute. A proclamation will be presented to the family at the event to honor PFC Chris White and to thank the White family for their dedication and commitment with Camp Hope and for the positive impact they have made on the lives of the Veterans that have visited Camp Hope and for all that they have done for the Veteran community.<\/p>\n

In conjunction with Camp Hope Day in Florissant on Sept. 14, proceeds from the Atonement Men\u2019s Club BBQ on Sept. 14 and 15 will be donated to Camp Hope. On June 20, 2006, U.S. Marine PFC Chris White, a machine gunner and four other Marines were riding in the last Humvee in a convoy traveling through Al-Anbar Province in Iraq when an IED exploded under their vehicle. PFC Chris White and three other Marines were killed. The death of PFC Chris White devastated his family. His parents Mike and Galia White wanted to keep his spirit alive, they founded the non-profit organization called Camp Hope. The mission of Camp Hope is to honor the fallen by helping the wounded. Camp Hope offers all expenses paid adventures and comradery for the service men and women that gave selflessly for our freedoms.<\/p>\n

Camp Hope is situated in rural Farmington, Missouri, approximately 80 miles south of St. Louis. With cool streams, winding creeks, granite boulders, gravel paths, tall trees and an abundance of wildlife, there is plenty of open space.<\/p>\n

Cast your line in the Mississippi River and test your cat fishing skills during the Sept. 14 inaugural Alton Catfish Classic Tournament. Land the big one and win a guaranteed $15,000 first place prize.<\/p>\n

Tournament organizers are still accepting entries for the contest. Teams can consist of up to three people with the boat captain age 18 or older. Entry fees are $250 per team and includes tournament T Shirts for all team members, the Captain\u2019s Dinner at Argosy Casino Alton on Friday, Sept. 13, and entry in the Alton Catfish Classic and Big Fish tournaments.<\/p>\n

Anglers will take part in a public weigh in of all fish caught during the tournament starting at 4 p.m. Trophies and prizes will be awarded at 5:30 p.m. on the Alton Riverfront during the annual Alton Expo. The tournament features a three fish limit and can include Blue Cat, Channel Cat and Flathead fish. Ten prizes will be awarded based on fish weight. Prize amounts range from a $15,000 first place pay out to $500 for a 10th place pay out. There is a $1,000 Big Fish prize.<\/p>\n

Mayor Tim Lowery announced that the City of Florissant Parks & Recreation Department will be hosting the 11th Annual Suicide Prevention Softball Tournament on Saturday, September 14 at St. Ferdinand Park.<\/p>\n

The softball tournament will start at 9 a.m. and there will be Men\u2019s and Co-ed Divisions ages 18+years to compete in. The cost is $125 per team. One hundred percent of the net proceeds go to local suicide prevention organizations funding local outreach programs.<\/p>\n

PROSTRATE CANCER ON SEPT. 21<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

The Salvation Army and Christian Hospital, partners in the Pathway to Health program at the Ferguson Community Empowerment Center, are hosting a free PSA Screening event on Saturday, Sept. 21, from 1-4 p.m. at the Empowerment Center, 9420 W. Florissant Rd.<\/p>\n

Screenings are blood-draw only and provided by health care professionals from Siteman Cancer Center and the Program for the Elimination of Cancer Disparities. Each participant receives a free gift. Prostate screenings are recommended for: \u2022 Men aged 40 years and over with a family history of prostate cancer\u2022 African-American men aged 40 and over \u2022 Men aged 50-plus who have not had a prostate screening in the last year and have not already been diagnosed with prostate cancer.<\/p>\n

Funding for Pathway to Health is provided in part by Missouri Foundation for Health. The Foundation is a resource for the region, working with communities and nonprofits to generate and accelerate positive changes in health. As a catalyst for change, the Foundation improves the health of Missourians through a combination of partnership, experience, knowledge, and funding.<\/p>\n

The Salvation Army has been working to better combat poverty and to assist those imprisoned by it. From developing a deeper understanding of the epidemic to identifying locations and population segments with the greatest need, The Salvation Army is pushing forward on all fronts and meets human needs without discrimination.<\/p>\n
