The Hazelwood Parks and Recreation Division is gearing up for another Hazelwood Harvestfest, scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 12, from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. This event will be held at Howdershell Park, located at 6800 Howdershell Road and next to Hazelwood\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Firehouse #2.<\/p>\n
“This year marks the 21st annual Hazelwood Harvestfest held in our community. It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s a gift given by the City on a yearly basis to show its appreciation to local residents for choosing Hazelwood as a place to live, work and play,” said Mayor Matthew Robinson, City of Hazelwood.
\n Admission is free, making it an affordable way of having fun with the whole family. Harvestfest also creates a great opportunity for local businesses to introduce their products and services to new customers, and for nonprofit organizations to raise money for charitable causes through offering games and selling food\/beverages. <\/p>\n
“Fairytales” Parade Theme<\/p>\n
Festivities begin at 9 a.m. with the Hazelwood Harvestfest parade. This year\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s theme is
\n“Fairytales.” The parade will begin at Hazelwood City Hall, 415 Elm Grove Lane, and wind its way down Town and Country Drive, west on Holiday Avenue, south on Imperial Drive and west on Village Square Drive to Howdershell Park.<\/p>\n
Music will be performed by the Hazelwood West High School “Marching Wildcats” and the John Ford Highland Pipe Band. Other parade units include colorful floats and decorated automobiles.<\/p>\n
Five cash prizes will be awarded to the best-decorated parade entry. Scout troops, church organizations and other civic\/business organizations interested in building a float or marching in the parade should call Pam Reynolds at (314) 513-5072. <\/p>\n
Children\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Activities<\/p>\n
At 10 a.m., Howdershell Park opens to the public. Everything from a petting zoo to an inflatable obstacle course to free pony rides will keep youngsters busy all day. Another attraction for kids, ages 10 and under, is the children\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s craft area where they can make three fairytale-related items such as a frog, crown or magic wand free of charge. In addition, a giant inflatable slide and Moon Bounce will be available for them to play on, including a huge dragon and wizard\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s castle.<\/p>\n
Miss Hazelwood Coronation<\/p>\n
The mystery of who will be crowned as Miss Hazelwood 2010 will be unveiled during the coronation ceremony at the main stage, starting at 10:30 a.m. To qualify as a participant of the Miss Hazelwood pageant, contestants must be young women between the ages of 15 and 19, as well as City residents.<\/p>\n
The reigning 2009 Miss Hazelwood Tiffany Jarvis will carry on the tradition of crowning the new 2010 Miss Hazelwood at the coronation ceremony. A $500 scholarship and other prizes will be awarded to the new queen.<\/p>\n
Horseshoe Tournaments<\/p>\n
Two tournaments will be held at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. at the Horseshoe Pits at Howdershell Park. Registration for both of them begins a half-hour early. Participants of all ages are welcome. Teams will be determined by a random drawing following registration. Trophies will be awarded to the winners.<\/p>\n
Bingo<\/p>\n
The Hazelnuts will be running two Bingo sessions at noon and 2 p.m. Anyone can play. Gift cards, small household items and snacks will be given away as prizes.<\/p>\n
Music Entertainment<\/p>\n
The Smash Band, labeled as “St. Louis\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 favorite party band” by St. Louis Sound Scene Magazine, will rock the house with a high-energy concert featuring songs from a variety of different music genres, starting at 3 p.m. Well-known media icon known as “Smash” will be backed by a dynamic horn section, multiple male\/female voices and one of the area\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s best lead guitarists.<\/p>\n
All Day Activities<\/p>\n
o Used Book Sale – Sponsored by the Community Enrichment Commission, this event allows guests to browse through hundreds of donated books and purchase them at a discount price. It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s a great opportunity to possibly find a literary gem or children\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s reading books for as little as a $1 each or less. All proceeds generated from the Used Book Sale are used to purchase newspaper and magazine subscriptions for Hazelwood\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s two recreation centers, to support the Commission\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s “Reading is Elementary Program” and to provide resources for the Garden Club.<\/p>\n
o Retired Flag Collection – American flags that are faded or tattered can be turned in at the City Services tent. They will be given to the VFW for proper disposal.<\/p>\n

H2Orchestra, a creative outdoor musical activity offered by the Worldways Children\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Museum, returns to the Hazelwood Harvestfest.<\/p>\n
It features musical instruments made out of tubes, pots and pans with water in them. Kids can play Fun Funnels, Splish & Splash Pianos, Water Steel Drums, Water Bells, Diving Gongs, Water Organ and much more.<\/p>\n
