Making Sense Out of a 1959 Iowa Plane Crash<\/span><\/em><\/h1>\n

and Don McLean\u2019s \u2018American Pie\u2019\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/h1>\n

It was a wintry Tuesday night, February 3, 1959. Sixty years ago. A single-engine Beechcraft couldn\u2019t handle the weather and crashed in a cornfield just outside Cedar Lake, Iowa.
\nLost were the pilot, Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and J.P. \u201cBigBopper\u201d Richardson. It was, according to the song by Don McLean, \u201cthe day the music died.\u201d Holly, of \u201cPeggy Sue\u201d fame, was 22. Valens, just 17, singer of \u201cLa Bamba.\u201d Richardson, a long time disc jockey and the oldest at 28, had his huge hit \u201cChantilly Lace.\u201d
\nHolly had just disbanded The Crickets. Dion DiMucci and his Belmont\u2019s were with their tour of
\nthe Midwest, but on the buses. McLean was a 13-year-old paperboy at the time, a \u201clonely teenage bronkin\u2019 buck\u201d obsessed with music. It wasn\u2019t until 12 years later that he wrote the song \u201cAmerican Pie.\u201d
\nSome say the over 800-word ballad is THE farewell to the beloved \u2018\u201950s and raucous\u201860s, and hello to the cynical \u201870s. It has been called the Ultimate Boomer Anthem. The song became our road trip theme as me and a couple college buddies drove to Miami just after Christmas in 1971 as the SLU soccer team defended its national championship at the Orange Bowl.
\nWe sang with the radio \u2018Bye, bye, Miss American Pie, drove my Chevy to the levee, but the levee was dry.\u2019 But we drove VW Bugs. And had little or no idea what any of it meant. Over the years, however, the meaning has become clearer. \u201cBye, Bye, Miss American Pie\u2026 the levee\u2026 this will be the day that I die.\u201d
\nThe composer was dating a beauty contestant, there was a bar called \u2018The Levee\u2019 near where he grew up. Holly also sang \u2018that\u2019ll be the day, that I die.\u201d Farewell to the old days? There was \u201cThe Book of Love\u201d from the \u201850s group The Monotones, \u201cboth kicked off your shoes\u201d at the sock hops, the slow dancing of youth.
\nWho was the \u201cJester\u201d who sang for the King and Queen? Most say it was Bob Dylan, and the Queen was protest-folk-singer Joan Baez, the King either Pete Seeger or Elvis. I\u2019m going with Elvis. Or Jack and Jackie? Your call, here. \u201cAs Lenin read a book on Marx, the quartet practiced in the park, and we sang dirges in the dark.\u201d
\nThe Beatles, and John Lennon, the other Lenin being long dead, a play on words. Remember how those sweet-love-song-singing Boys from Liverpool turned radical with the album \u2018Revolution\u2019 in 1968? Yeah, yeah, yeah. The group broke up April 10, 1970. Maybe another \u2018day the music died.\u2019
\nAs for dirges, think two Kennedys, a King, and thousands of soldiers killed in Southeast Asia. \u201cHelter Skelter\u2026 summer swelter\u2026 birds fly high in a fallout shelter\u2026eight miles high?\u201d Again the Beatles with the song reference, the Manson Family murders, the devil taking over, the Byrds with \u201cEight Miles High.\u201d
\n\u201cHalftime air with sweet perfume . . . players take the field\u2026 marching band refused to yield\u2026 in the streets the children screamed?\u201d Think marijuana, Vietnam War protests in every city. Think napalm. Think the 1968 Democratic Convention in Chicago. Think Kent State.
\n\u201cHere we were all in one place, a generation lost in space. Jack Flash\u2026 the devils only friend\u2026 angel born in Hell\u2026 Satan laughing with delight.\u201d How about Woodstock, and \u201cdanger, Will Robinson.\u201d
\nIn 1969, the Rolling Stone headlined what was billed as a second Woodstock at the Altoona Speedway in California. The Hells Angels were used as security, and it became a bloodbath as they beat the concertgoers. Jumpin\u2019 Jack Flash and his band were helicoptered out as \u2018the flames climbed high into the night.\u201d
\n\u201cI met a girl who sang the blues\u2026\u201d Janis Joplin. \u201cSacred store.\u201d McLean\u2019s neighborhood record shop. \u201cNot a word was spoken.\u201d Simon and Garfunkel\u2019s \u201cSounds of Silence\u201d, a nihilist-depressing anthem if ever there was one. More \u2018music dying? \u2019\u2018Church bells all were broken\u2026 the three men I admire most, the Father, Son and the Holy Ghost, they caught the last train for the coast.\u201d
\nFor McLean, a Catholic, had God abandoned us? Fled to the West Coast, Land of Moral Breakdown? (My words, not his.) What else died in the collective American soul during those days? But still, we keep singin\u2019\u2026 \u201cBye, Bye, Miss American Pie. Drove my Chevy to the . . .\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
