\n After 15 years of service as the City of Hazelwood\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s director of public works and city engineer, Tom Manning is retiring. His replacement, David Stewart of Newton, Ia., has been hired with a starting date of August 1.<\/p>\n
As the person in charge of public works, Tom was responsible for overseeing the Maintenance Division, Parks & Recreation, Code Administration and the City\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s trash collection. In his capacity as the city\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s engineer, he provided guidance to the City Council, Planning Commission and to other members of city management.<\/p>\n
One of his major accomplishments was the successful execution of a $15 million dollar Bond Issue program, which involved resurfacing virtually every street within the city. This six-year project was completed in four years, adding much needed improvements to Hazelwood\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s infrastructure.<\/p>\n
Under his watch, the quality of life for Hazelwood residents was enhanced with the implementation of these projects:<\/p>\n
o Construction of a $5.7 million, state-of-the-art facility known as Hazelwood\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s White Birch Bay Aquatic Center, which is ranked among the “Top 10” water parks in the St. Louis area<\/p>\n
o Completion of the Sprayground at Musick Park<\/p>\n
o Expansion of the city\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s spring limb chipping and leaf vacuuming programs<\/p>\n
o Successfully getting grants approved for the one-lane bridge replacement on Teson Road, white topping of Hazelwood Avenue, reconstruction of Missouri Bottom Road and reconstruction
\nof Fee Fee Road<\/p>\n
o Streetscaping of North Lindbergh Boulevard, enhancing the aesthetics of the main corridor through Hazelwood<\/p>\n
o Moving of The Knobbe House and Utz-Teson House to Brookes Park<\/p>\n
Tom and his wife, Jan, will celebrate their 41st wedding anniversary in August. They
\nhave two children, Sarah Almond and Thomas the IV, as well as three grandchildren; Michael, 21; Cassidy, 9; and Maggie, 4. Tom is very proud of his family and looks forward to spending more time with them. <\/p>\n
Tom and Jan bought 20 acres of land and have built a beautiful retirement home on the property, which provides a spectacular lakefront view of Jan\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Lake.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
