The ceremony was held in partnership with the Greater North County Chamber of Commerce.<\/p>\n<p>Kimberly Quayle, MD, the Dana Brown chair in pediatric emergency medicine and professor of pediatrics at Washington University School of Medicine, serves as medical director of pediatric services at Northwest HealthCare, which began July 1. She received her medical degree and completed fellowship at Washington University School of Medicine, and completed her residency at St. Louis Children\u2019s Hospital, including a year as chief resident. A ribbon-cutting ceremony marked the start of an innovative new opportunity for HSD students.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt; line-height: 120%;\"><span style=\"font-family: serif; color: black;\">The health center is the first of its kind in the Hazelwood School District, and allows students to access several health services during school hours. Students can receive immunizations, physicals, behavioral services, nutrition guidance, referrals for other medical services, and more at the new facility.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt; line-height: 120%;\"><span style=\"font-family: serif; color: black;\">The center was the result of a collaboration between the Hazelwood School District, Christian Hospital Foundation, CareSTL Health, Health Equity Works, and Show-Me School Based Health Alliance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt; line-height: 120%;\"><span style=\"color: black;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-family: serif; color: black;\">We know that this would not have been made possible without the dedication and leadership of our community partners, and we\u2019re very grateful to them for that support,\u201d HSD Superintendent Dr. Nettie Collins-Hart said. \u201cWe are excited that our students can have safe, convenient access to healthcare right now.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt; line-height: 120%;\"><span style=\"font-family: serif; color: black;\">The School Health Center will serve approximately 1,300 of the Hazelwood district\u2019s middle and high school students.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt; line-height: 120%;\"><span style=\"font-family: serif; color: black;\">One of the primary goals of the center is to cut down on missed class time for students, both by keeping them healthier and providing on-site care instead of students leaving the building for health appointments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt; line-height: 120%;\"><span style=\"color: black;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-family: serif; color: black;\">This center truly is the possibility that, not only do students change what they know about medical care, but it opens up the opportunity to receive medical care right where they are,\u201d HSD Coordinator of Health Services Christian Bertel said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt; line-height: 120%;\"><span style=\"font-family: serif; color: black;\">Accessibility also was a driving factor in opening the facility.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt; line-height: 120%;\"><span style=\"color: black;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-family: serif; color: black;\">What we wanted to do was increase the access points for children in our community to have preventative services,\u201d CareSTL Director of Behavioral Health Regina Askew said. \u201cWe want our children to be knowledgeable of preventative care, and to be able to access those services.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt; line-height: 120%;\"><span style=\"font-family: serif; color: black;\">At the ceremony, Director of Health Equity Works Dr. Jason Purnell discussed how health facilities in schools can help students achieve in multiple ways.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt; line-height: 120%;\"><span style=\"color: black;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-family: serif; color: black;\">School-based health centers are an important intervention because of their ability to improve not just health outcomes, but also educational outcomes,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s partnerships like what we see here today that makes school-based health centers successful and sustainable, but it\u2019s also these kinds of partnerships that give us hope for the future of our children, our communities, and our country.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 470\/203;\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-20303\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">District and community healthcare officials join to celebrate proclamation of Hazelwood East School-Based Health Center Day issued by Barbara Fraser, Education Liaison for County Executive.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Grants Available Through John Knox Presbyterian Church <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Applications for a grant for creative projects designed to meet basic human needs of people served within the boundaries of the Ferguson-Florissant and Hazelwood School Districts are now being accepted by John Knox Presbyterian Church in Florissant.<\/p>\n<p>The annual grant will be awarded for a new creative project or a new facet of an existing project in an amount ranging from $500 to $3,000. The project must focus on how it will<\/p>\n<p>work with women, children, youth, young adults, persons of diverse races and\/or ethnicities, and\/or persons with disabilities, to enhance their quality of life.<\/p>\n<p>This is a one-time grant for a project, which does not have to be completed in a single year, but which must be underway within 12 months of receiving the funds. Applications must be postmarked by April 30, with decisions made in May. Funds will be disbursed in June.
