Destiny Shanks, a first grade teacher at Garrett Elementary School, received the 2009 Outstanding Beginning Teacher Award from the Missouri Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (MACTE). She was one of 65 Missouri educators honored by MACTE.<\/p>\n
“I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m just ecstatic,” Shanks said. “I was very surprised, but at the same time I was proud of myself and excited.” She paused for a moment to reconsider. “But probably not as excited as my parents.”<\/p>\n
She and her principal Crystal Reiter traveled to Jefferson City, where Shanks received her award, as well as participated in educational workshops sponsored by MACTE. <\/p>\n
Every two years, Maryville University participates with other teacher preparation institutions across the state to identify up to two individuals per institution to receive the award and attend the spring MACTE recognition ceremony. <\/p>\n
“For me, I always knew I wanted to be a teacher,” Shanks said. “I was so excited when I first started. There were so many things to learn and to do. You have to find what works for you in your classroom. It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s trial-and-error and adapting your teaching style to your kids\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 learning style.”<\/p>\n
Shanks said it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s a privilege to work with diverse students and learners. She sees herself as a role model for students who are at an impressionable age.<\/p>\n
“I wake up every morning and I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m so excited,” she said. “I think it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s a blessing to be a teacher. Even when I go to sleep at night, I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m thinking about what I can do to make my lessons better.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
