The legal matter involving my son that has been written about in the media is being handled by my son’s attorney, David Nauman. Mr. Nauman advises that he and my son endorsed Florissant Judge Dan Boyle\u2019s desire to refer this case to St. Louis County, as did I.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, Florissant Prosecutor Todd Marler has assured me that he has taken action to recuse his team from the case so that it is decided without any influence from our city.\u00a0\u00a0 I am not an attorney, so I do not know the details of the legal process, and I cannot answer any questions on that subject.<\/p>\n

In regard to letters and articles in the media about my involvement, all I can say is that I believe in the rule of law and that the rule of law should prevail in my son’s case, as it should in any case. I have always had profound appreciation for our system of government, enhanced by military and elected service, including great respect for the separation of powers.<\/p>\n

As a parent, I am naturally concerned about all of my children. As Mayor, I made every effort to follow Judge Boyle\u2019s lead and encouraged that our Prosecutor team have no involvement in my son’s case.<\/p>\n

I am sometimes called upon to look into concerns brought forth by defense attorneys about how they are treated in our court. This situation is no different. I must also give attention to issues brought up by any member of the prosecuting team when that member points out a problem. I do not have the authority to control what a prosecutor does, nor do I want to have that authority. However, it is my responsibility to select the leadership of the prosecution team to ensure fairness for all concerned.<\/p>\n

It is my fervent hope to assure the residents of Florissant that we are committed to the rule of law and to continuing to have an independent Municipal Court which dispenses justice impartially.<\/p>\n
