Perhaps the biggest surprise of the April 7th election was the defeat of incumbent Mayor T.R. Carr by Hazelwood City Councilman Matt Robinson.
\n Robinson, councilman in Hazelwood for the past 15 years, defeated Carr by about 250 votes or a 54.7-45.3 margin. Carr has been mayor of Hazelwood for the past nine years.<\/p>\n
Mayor Carr told The Independent News late Tuesday night that he can look back over the past 9 years with a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment. <\/p>\n
“I have enjoyed serving the citizens of Hazelwood and the achievements of the city are significant,” Carr stated. The St. Louis Mills and Cabela’s are here, the Ford site is being redeveloped, and the city has diversified its tax base, the mayor said. “During the tough financial times in the past we were able to maintain city services and avoid any employee layoffs. I have left the city in sound financial shape to face future challenges,” Carr said.<\/p>\n
Florissant and Paddock Estate subdivision residents approved annexation of 87 acres to the city. The city had tried several times to annex the area.<\/p>\n
Florissant incumbent Councilmen Keith Schildroth, Tim Lee and Ben Hernandez were reelected with Hernandez narrowly defeating former councilwoman Nancy Lubiewski. <\/p>\n
In school board races, Mark Behlmann and Desiree Whitlock were reelected in the Hazelwood School District and Paul Schroeder and John Knowles were reelected in the Ferguson-Florissant School District.<\/p>\n
Voters in the Florissant Valley Fire Protection District turned down a 15-cent tax hike for the pension fund. Daniel Lubiewski was elected to the fire board. <\/p>\n
