Over the years it seems to have evolved into a celebration honoring all of those who have served and fought so that everyday Americans can enjoy their freedom.<\/p>\n<p>This year, the City of Florissant and Florissant Old Town Partners extended the Memorial Day weekend with their &#8220;Proud to Be An American- Wednesday Night Out&#8221; event on May 31. It was the first Old Town Wednesday night out for the season. Valley of Flowers maid Sophie Capra sang the <em>Star Spangled\u00a0\u00a0 Banner.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The event offered activities for all age groups. Children had the opportunity to get their face painted as well as grab snow cones from a Kona Ice van. The festivities were complimented with live music by Silver Wings.<\/p>\n<p>Derick Wellman, owner of Amore Pizza, even dressed as Uncle Sam to show his support as he walked around and greeted people in front of his restaurant. &#8220;I&#8217;m really happy to be providing free snow cones&#8230;it makes me feel real good that the kids are enjoying (the event),\u201d said Wellman.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.flovalleynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Uncle-Sam-wants-you.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-17396 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.flovalleynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Uncle-Sam-wants-you-154x300.jpg?resize=154%2C300\" alt=\"Uncle Sam wants you\" width=\"154\" height=\"300\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 154px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 154\/300;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In addition to hamburgers, beer, soda and other delicacies commonly associated with patriotic events, there were also raffles and a plethora of arts and crafts tables for participants.<\/p>\n<p>Bridgette Atkins of Phancy Fingers and Feet and Boutique had a number of jewelry pieces for sale near Amore&#8217;s Pizza.&#8221;Fifty percent (of the money collected) will go to Old Town associates,&#8221; said Atkins.<\/p>\n<p>The raffles also benefited Old Town Florissant. &#8220;We had over $700 of goodies donated,&#8221; said City Councilman Tim Lee, who was an attendant of the raffle booth.
