The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4105 honored two Florissant Police Officers; Kimberly Berry and Freddie Lee, before the start of the Florissant City Council meeting on May 22 for creating a mentoring program for students at Combs School. VFW 12th District Commander Ken Allison presented the two officers the National Public Service Award.<\/p>\n

Officer Freddie Lee and Officer Kim Berry are two of the department\u2019s School Resource Officers (SRO) and both veterans of our Armed Forces, who are both assigned to schools within the Ferguson-Florissant School District. After recognizing the need for at risk youth to have more positive interactions with law enforcement, both officers met with the principal of Combs School and proposed a mentoring program they had created.<\/p>\n

The proposed program called for the school to identify approximately 12 \u201cat risk\u201d students (Kindergarten through 6th grade) and Officers Lee and Berry met with the kids for the length of the school year for one hour a week. The program was capped off with a field trip to the police station and a \u201cpizza party\u201d thrown by Officers Lee and Berry.<\/p>\n

With the help of Police Chief Timothy Lowery, the Florissant VFW Post 4105 had entered these Police Officers for a National VFW Public Service Award. Officer Lee and Officer Berry finished in the top two for the State of Missouri.<\/p>\n

The State Department of the VFW forwarded their bios to The National Headquarters where they were both awarded The National Public Service Award signed by The Veterans of Foreign Wars National Commander in Chief, Brian Duffy.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
