{"id":17268,"date":"2017-05-09T12:09:02","date_gmt":"2017-05-09T18:09:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.flovalleynews.com\/?p=17268"},"modified":"2017-05-09T12:09:02","modified_gmt":"2017-05-09T18:09:02","slug":"55th-annual-valley-of-flowers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/flovalleynews.com\/?p=17268","title":{"rendered":"55th Annual Valley of Flowers"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Sunny Skies Were in Order After Wet Week;<\/h2>\n<h2><strong>New Queen Crowned <\/strong><strong>For Valley of Flowers<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3><strong>By Nichole Richardson<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.flovalleynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/2017-VF-Queeen-Court.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-17269 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.flovalleynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/2017-VF-Queeen-Court-470x291.jpg?resize=470%2C291\" alt=\"2017 VF Queeen &amp; Court\" width=\"470\" height=\"291\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This year&#8217;s 55th annual Valley of Flowers Festival queen coronation, held at the St. Rose Philippine Duchesne Knights of Columbus Pavilion #2951, was a beautiful and refreshing change from the past week of gloom and doom rain the city had seen.<\/p>\n<p>The 2017 theme was \u201cValley of Flowers Celebrates&#8230;The Wonders of the World,\u201d and the \u201cfirst festival of spring\u201d was held May 5-7 in Old Town Florissant.<\/p>\n<p>Dozens of high school girls competed for the titles of VOF Queen, first runner-up, or special maid. Mayor Thomas Schneider was back on deck this year to announce winners and even joked with the excited crowd that Steve Harvey and Warren Betty were unavailable for the job.<\/p>\n<p>2016 Queen Katie Wissler spoke her closing comments as Queen and then handed off the crown to Incarnate Word student Megan Pilla, who was sponsored by the Locker Room.<\/p>\n<p>Wissler&#8217;s advice to the newly crowned Pilla, was \u201cto always have a smile on her face and to always be thankful and gracious.\u201d An innocent-looking Megan was shocked to have won and stood out in her baby-girl pink and sequins floor-length gown.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am just so surprised,\u201d chirped Pilla, \u201cI can&#8217;t wait to experience all the new things here in Florissant and grow closer to the Court!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her first official event was Monday night at the annual Queen\u2019s Dinner hosted by Commerce Bank and held at the Detrick\u2019s Center at Christian Hospital Northeast.<\/p>\n<p>Valley of Flowers candidates are sponsored by local businesses and organizations and are then chosen by a panel of judges.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to the ceremony, many awards are also given out for numerous contests such as Pretty Baby, sponsors, and parade units.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sunny Skies Were
