\nVehicles heading southbound on the new Hwy. 367 above-grade highway opened to traffic on Saturday. The new section goes from New Jamestown Road to I-270.<\/p>\n

After 18 months of construction and nearly 30 years of discussion and controversy, the new above-grade Highway 367 open to traffic Saturday with little fanfare.<\/p>\n

The stretch of 367 was known for some of its dangerous and confusing intersections at Dunn, Parker and Redman Roads. Now there are southbound exits at Parker and Dunn Roads, and northbound exits at Dunn, Parker and New Jamestown Road. There is no access off the highway onto Redman Road. Dunn Road is now one-way southbound, while Lusher is one-way Northbound. <\/p>\n

Motorists heading northbound can exit Parker and loop back to southbound Dunn and Redman Road. There is now only one signal light from the Clark bridge in Alton to Lambert Airport. Previously there were five. <\/p>\n

The new stretch of highway is expected to be a boom for access to and from Alton, shortening the drive times Alton Mayor Donald Sandidge said the faster connection could boost Alton’s economy. “We’re a lot closer now,” he said. <\/p>\n

Plans for making Highway 367 above grade with ramps have been in the planning stage for nearly 30 years. It had been included in MoDOT’s 15-year plan back in the late 1970s. Many residents had opposed the one-way access roads on Dunn and Lusher, but a loop road to the other side of the highway will make it better.
