More than 700 students, staff, families, and members of the Hazelwood School District community spent a recent Saturday talking to university representatives and community partners, building items on 3D printers, trying their hand at flight simulators, and learning about robotics.<\/p>\n

\"HSD<\/a>
Hazelwood School District patrons had the opportunity to visit a variety of tables set up to allow residents to learn more about the STEM opportunities offered by the District and how these opportunities position our students for careers.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

These were just a few of the activities and opportunities available at the STEM Extravaganza. This event showcased a variety of educational opportunities in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) for students in kindergarten through 12th grade. The Extravaganza was held on Jan. 21 at Hazelwood Central High School.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe STEM Extravaganza provided an opportunity for community members to learn more about the STEM opportunities offered by the District and how these opportunities position our students for careers in these advanced fields,\u201d said Matt McClellan, Hazelwood School District (HSD) curriculum coordinator for special areas. \u201cBusinesses are in need of candidates with strong skills in the STEM areas. The Extravaganza was an excellent opportunity for our students and families to speak with representatives and learn what it takes to be successful in these areas.\u201d<\/p>\n

During the STEM Extravaganza, attendees participated in demonstrations, hands-on activities, and robotics. Multiple exhibitors, universities, speakers, and community partners were in attendance. Exhibitors included: St. Louis Zoo, Boeing, Washington University, University of Missouri-Kansas City, St. Louis Science Center, St. Louis University, Project Lead the Way, HSD Math and Science classes, the University of Missouri-St. Louis, and more.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs a school district we are always striving to increase student achievement and to strengthen relationships with our HSD families and the community,\u201d said Hazelwood Supt. Nettie Collins-Hart. \u201cAs we continue to build coalition and capacity in our schools, STEM Extravaganza provided a wonderful platform for our students and staff to reach out to organizations, businesses and other stakeholders in our community to ensure our community continues to move forward. On behalf of our students and entire school district, we are grateful for all who participated.\u201d<\/p>\n

The STEM Extravaganza exemplifies two of the district\u2019s goals; increasing student achievement and increasing parent and community engagement.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
