Ballot Issues For April 5th<\/sup> Elections<\/h1>\n

 <\/p>\n

The number of candidates for next Tuesday, April 3rd<\/sup> municipal elections is lighter in our area of North County than in previous years, but there are several ballot issues on tap in both Florissant and Hazelwood. There are no council races in Florissant and only one contested race in Hazelwood. Black Jack has two contested council races.<\/p>\n

Both incumbents in the Hazelwood School Board ballot Cheryl Latham and Karlton Thorton are unopposed and thus will be elected automatically. In the Ferguson-Florissant School District, incumbent Leslie Hogstead is one of four candidates seeking 3-year terms. The others are Connie Harge, Roger Hines and Donna Dameron. Two of the four will be elected.<\/p>\n

The Black Jack Fire Protection District seeks a levy hike of \u201cnot more than 15 cents per $100 assessed valuation,\u201d the ballot issue states. The additional revenues shall be used for the firefighters, EMTs and Paramedics pension program.<\/p>\n

Hazelwood is electing a council member from Ward 5, with candidates for Wards 1, 3,<\/p>\n

4, and 7 running unopposed. The Ward 5 race is between incumbent Russell Todd and Lisa M. Matlock. Four propositions for Charter Amendments are also on the Hazelwood docket. The issues being addressed include compensation for elected officials, use of eminent domain, improving efficiency, handling business licenses, appointment of a civil service board and updating election procedures.<\/p>\n

Florissant residents are asked to approve Propositions B, R, and A, as they appear on the ballot. Prop B would allow Florissant to continue collecting local sales tax on vehicles purchased outside of Missouri. Prop R would increase the fee for a residential rental license to $50 per rental unit. Prop A allows the city to charge an annual registration fee of $200 for each residence that has been vacant for more than 6 months.<\/p>\n
