Hazelwood Southeast Middle School has been named as the only school in St. Louis County to pilot a Missouri Integrated Model (MIM) grant program totaling $49,160.<\/p>\n
MIM is a five-year grant funded by the U.S. Department of Education and its purpose is to combine all of a school\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s reform efforts into one model.<\/p>\n
“This is a real honor; they just chose two schools in the St. Louis region, not two school districts, but two schools,” said Carol Fouse, the school\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s principal. “The grant will benefit our student body so much to put this model into place,” Fouse said. <\/p>\n
She explained that she and her group are using a self-study from the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) to determine what their needs are.<\/p>\n
“We already are doing a lot of the things recommended by the self-study,” Fouse added. “This year is a study and planning year, next year is a learning year and after that, we will implement and train other schools in the program,” said Fouse.<\/p>\n
The MIM framework focuses on supporting academic achievement and successful behavior through three tiers of support that acknowledge and address diversity in student learning. Using a pyramid divided into three colors, Fouse explained the tiers.<\/p>\n
“The green section of this covers about 80 percent of our students, those who receive services that are available for every student, such as counseling and the District\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) program.<\/p>\n
“The yellow tier represents about 10 to 15 percent of our student body \u00e2\u20ac\u201c those who need extra help to succeed.” Tutoring programs like Academic Excellence are available for these students, as are extra study times and small group counseling.<\/p>\n
The red area covers the remaining portion of the students and is the most intensive, Fouse said. <\/p>\n
“They need individual planning; no other level works for them. We tailor a plan of support for their success. The grant will let us have a lot of professional development for our teachers so they can be experts at every one of these levels.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
