{"id":14130,"date":"2015-03-16T11:53:21","date_gmt":"2015-03-16T17:53:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.flovalleynews.com\/?p=14130"},"modified":"2015-03-16T11:53:21","modified_gmt":"2015-03-16T17:53:21","slug":"3-ffsd-high-school-students-making-historic-alabama-walk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/flovalleynews.com\/?p=14130","title":{"rendered":"3 FFSD High School Students Making Historic Alabama Walk"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Three Ferguson-Ferguson School District students will be among 150 youth from throughout the nation who will make the 54-mile historic trek from Selma to Montgomery, AL., March 20-25.\u00a0 The students \u2013 DeAnna Harper, a senior at McCluer North High School; Emani Irving, a junior at McCluer South\u2013Berkeley High School; and Vaughn Ross, a senior at McCluer High School \u2013 will participate in the iconic walk as members of the \u201cWalking Classroom\u201d in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the voting rights march.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cWalking Classroom\u201d is sponsored by the National Park Service and is designed to provide a memorable, life-changing experience for participants.\u00a0 Through discussions with the actual foot soldiers of the march, participants will learn of the strife and sacrifice that was endured to secure voting equality.<\/p>\n<p>The journey will begin in Selma on Friday, March 20 and conclude on the Capital steps in Montgomery on Wednesday, March 25. The trek will provide participants an opportunity to reflect and share with their peers and a broader audience the ongoing struggle for human rights, the impact of the events of 1965, and the residual influence those events have upon the nation and world<\/p>\n<p>The district received an invitation to participate in the \u201cWalking Classroom\u201d through its work with the National Alliance for Faith and Justice and the Pen and Pencil Initiative.\u00a0 Social studies teacher Michelle Grigsby will be along on the journey.<\/p>\n<p>During the five days and nights of the march, participants will camp as marchers did historically, with sleeping bags and in tents.
