St. Louis Community College-Florissant Valley will celebrate African-American History Month throughout February.<\/p>\n
On Feb. 4 from 11 a.m. \u2013 1 p.m., there will be a kickoff celebration in the Student Center Multipurpose Room featuring an African dance troupe, a presentation about Elijah Lovejoy from Barnes Bradshaw with the Missouri History Museum, musical performances, free food and giveaways. Kenneth Murdock, of the Murdock Report on WGNU-AM, will give the keynote address.<\/p>\n
On Feb. 12 from noon \u2013 1 p.m., there will be a \u201cLunch and Learn\u201d session in the Student Center Multipurpose Room. Roosevelt Mitchell III, author, public speaker, disability advocate, special education teacher and president of the Roosevelt Mitchell III Foundation, will speak about disabilities and poverty.<\/p>\n
On Feb. 18 from 11 a.m. \u2013 noon in the Student Center Multipurpose Room, Linda Collins, assistant professor of history at STLCC, will give a presentation on the Ferguson crisis and the painful rebirth of the American Civil Rights Movement.<\/p>\n
On Feb. 19 at 10 a.m. in the Child Development Center, Bobby Norfolk, an internationally known story performer, will offer a storytelling session.<\/p>\n
On Feb. 25 from noon \u2013 3 p.m., the month-long celebration ends with an Open Mic session in the Student Center Multipurpose Room. This event offers students, staff and the community a chance to share their original poetry as well as brief political or social issue speeches.<\/p>\n
