The start of the school year may have been delayed for Ferguson-Florissant students, but staff and administration were at work after the Board of Education made the decision to postpone the start of school to Monday, Aug. 25. It was sultry hot day nearing 100 on Monday, but classes officially began in the large school district with few hitches.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur staff has taken advantage of this extra week to make scheduling adjustments, ensure the safety of our campuses and prepare our staff to welcome our students and celebrate a new school year,\u201d said acting superintendent Lawrence Larrew.<\/p>\n
Nearly 2,000 staff members who work directly with students took part in RISE training on Aug. 21. RISE is a professional learning event for caring response, intervention, support and education for our school community<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019d like to thank UMSL, CHADS Coalition, Lutheran Family Services and many others who are coming together to support our community,” said Aimee Cacciatore, Ferguson-Florissant’s director of student services. \u00a0“Our staff learned about what crisis looks like in children of various ages and how to respond to them with care and concern and refer those who need extra support,” said Cacciatore.<\/p>\n
Several scheduling changes<\/strong> were made. Busing routes have been expanded so more students at Griffith Elementary can get a ride to school.<\/p>\n All three high school football teams opened their season over the weekend. Home games scheduled at McCluer and McCluer South-Berkeley were moved.\u00a0 The McCluer Comets will took on Clyde C. Miller Career Academy at Gateway Technical field at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 23.\u00a0 The McCluer South-Berkeley Bulldogs played Cleveland Naval Jr. ROTC at Sumner High School field.<\/p>\n Starting last week, the district provided over 500 sack lunches for students throughout the district at Airport Elementary, Duschene Elementary, Griffith Elementary, Holman Elementary and Wedgwood Elementary.\u00a0Students from all schools came to these locations through Friday to pick up a nutritious lunch.<\/p>\n \u201cWhile we didn\u2019t anticipate a delayed start to our school year, I am really pleased with how our staff has come together in such a short time to ensure our kids can have a fun and normal start,\u201d said Larrew.\u00a0 The district is launching a new Online Learning Resource for parents and students so that learning can take place any time.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" The start of the school year may have been delayed for Ferguson-Florissant students, but staff and administration were at work after the Board of Education made the decision to postpone the start of school to Monday, Aug. 25.
