Hazelwood Firefighter\/Paramedics Honored
for Exemplary Service \u2013 Two HFD firefighter\/paramedics were honored recently with the \u201cChief\u2019s Award\u201d for their efforts in delivering a healthy baby on the side of a busy highway. At the recent Hazelwood City Council meeting, Fire Chief Dave Radel, with assistance from Mayor Matthew Robinson, presented the \u201cChief\u2019s Award\u201d to two of his firefighter\/paramedics.\u00a0 Both Amanda Boyer and Kevin Marshall were recognized and honored for actions that exemplify the ideals of the Hazelwood Emergency Services.<\/p><\/div>\n

On Feb.\u00a0 4, firefighter\/paramedics assigned to fire truck 4115 and ambulance 4117 of the Hazelwood Fire Department responded to an Emergency 911 call about a pregnant woman in need of assistance on westbound I-270 near the North Lindbergh Boulevard overpass.\u00a0 While en route to the scene, Hazelwood police officers advised them it was an imminent delivery.<\/p>\n

Upon arrival at the scene, the firefighter\/paramedics were greeted by the woman\u2019s husband who exclaimed, \u201cThe baby is coming!\u201d\u00a0 One of them, Amanda Boyer, calmed the pregnant woman and assessed her medical needs.<\/p>\n

Boyer delivered the baby girl with minimal complications. Her ambulance partner, Kevin Marshall, notified the hospital and took care of the mother while Boyer stayed with the newborn.\u00a0 Fire Capt. Michael Eisenbais recorded the time of birth and coordinated the efforts of his crew members as well as preparing the ambulance for transport with two patients.\u00a0 Also, Hazelwood police officers were on hand to guide traffic around the scene and to monitor everyone\u2019s safety that cold evening.<\/p>\n

The mom and baby girl were transported to the hospital by a Hazelwood ambulance and found to be in good health upon their arrival.\u00a0 While celebrating with the new parents afterwards, there was a \u201ctongue-in-cheek\u201d discussion about giving the baby girl a middle name of \u201cHazel\u201d since she was born in the City of Hazelwood.\u00a0 However, the department hasn\u2019t received any confirmation that this was carried out.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
