Hazelwood School District staff took part\u00a0 Feb. 13 and 14 in a two-day 4 E\u2019s- Educate, Evade, Escape and Engage course designed to prepare and respond to an active shooter\/intruder.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Twenty-five HSD employees underwent\u00a0intense simulation drills using classrooms on Friday, Febr.\u00a0 14.\u00a0 The training will take place at the HSD Administration Building, located at 15955 New Halls Ferry Road. Graduates of the 4 E\u2019s course will then in turn be able to offer training to other Hazelwood School District employees.<\/p>\n

Hazelwood School District has contracted with Tier One Tactical Solutions LLC to provide the 4 E\u2019s train the trainers instructor\u2019s course.<\/p>\n

Since the tragic events that took place at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut in December 2012, the Hazelwood School District has reviewed and evaluated every aspect of school safety. All safety protocols, procedures and plans were re-examined. Ultimately, the District\u2019s School Emergency Operations Manual was\u00a0updated and three parent engagement forums on school safety were held.<\/p>\n

The Hazelwood School District was also the first St. Louis County school district to take part in an option based response program provided by the St. Louis County Police Tactical Operations Unit, in collaboration with the Hazelwood and Florissant Police departments. This first of its kind training took place in August 2013. 2500 HSD staff members learned how to respond to a dangerous intruder.<\/p>\n

Local law enforcement officials have conducted school safety audits in every building and safety improvements were part of construction projects throughout the district.<\/p>\n

HSD also created an atmosphere where students, staff and parents are comfortable in alerting the principal or other school officials of a possible threat. The 4 E\u2019s training is part of a collaborative effort between District employees, Tier One Tactical Solutions, local law enforcement and fire protection agencies to continuously make adjustments as needed to improve school safety for the entire Hazelwood School District.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
